Trainer Road workout inside a Zwift Event or Race?

I’ve been using the TR integration since the day it was announced (and way before that ), what I’ve never tried is running a TR workout inside an event?

Specifically the raft of Zwift unlocked events that are on. Can I join one of those and run the TR workout inside that event?

By default, as a TR workout managed by zwift, it won’t work AFAIK. The unlocked events are designated as group rides or races - zwift won’t allow workouts to run for either of those.

But you can work around this: Disconnect your trainer as power source from zwift and run your workout via TR. This way you will get your workout and can run the zwift event at the same time. TR will control the resistance and Zwift will only read power data to move the avatar forward but not be able to influence resistance.

Great stuff thanks @martenk do I run the TR workout outside of Zwift then as I used to do many years ago!!

You can free ride the routes and get double XP etc seperate from the group rides. This will allow you to run the TrainerRoad workout in Zwift - just launch the route from the zwift unlocked tab and then go to workouts on the menu once inside the ride. You get the credit for doing the Zwift unlocked event.

Doesnt really answer your question but if you want to complete the Zwift Unlocked whilst doing the workouts and arent worried about the group ride aspect of it then this is a way you can do it.

ah cool, I thought they were event only routes, that’s perfect then!

Here’s what I do. I run a laptop with trainerroad on it using Ant+. Then I have zwift on my appletv connected with Bluetooth. Just make sure you leave the controllable slot open in zwfit so TR can control the trainer.

Do this regularly

TR on Ipad

Zwift on PC

Just make sure not to save the Zwift one at the end (unless it ends up being significantly different and you need it saved) as you’ll get duplicates on Strava etc

Before the integration I ran Zwift and TR together on different devices for years. It can be fun on the large group rides, but you will get dropped like a rock during the recovery intervals of your workout. One tip is to time the start of the ride with the start of your first interval which depending on the type of interval will have you taking off with the lead group. You’ll then get dropped and passed like crazy during your recovery interval. It’s then kinda fun to see how many groups you can pass during your next interval. Overall it makes for a good distraction while you’re doing your workout. Works best with longer intervals like sweet spot or threshold and also with a large group ride as with the smaller ones you’ll likely end up solo pretty fast.

cheers all, I’ve been using Zwift and TR since 2020 together, I even wrote an article on it  Running Zwift and TrainerRoad Together | Zwift Insider

I’ve gone back to running zwift and TR separately on my PC even after the integration - I prefer it for lots of reasons - one being the ability to dip in and out of routes and events on zwift while running a TR workout.

Done exactly this today. Zwift running on Apple TV. TR running on old iPad with Ant+ adaptor. Works fine, just ensure ‘Controllable’ is unselected in Zwift. Indeed, this was the retro way for years until the recent TR/Zwift integration.

I’ve actually mostly gone back to TR on my phone as a “head unit” and then Zwift on a PC with a bigger screen in front of me. The integration is cool, but I agree there a lot of upsides to the “old” way.
