I have been using Trainer Road since the end of February and have done a variety of plans. The question I have is why don’t the plans incorporate any sprint activities or do they and I just am using the “wrong” ones. I don’t “need” to do sprint workout per say, just curious as to why all the other training elements seem to get love, but sprinting not so much.

Good question here!
Although we tend to assume that absolute peak power is key to winning sprints, it is more important to be able to produce high but non-peak power in a depleted state.
This, combined with positioning and technique, wins sprints much more often than just max power.
With that in mind, custom plans that target a criterium or rolling road race have anaerobic workouts that target repeated, very high intensity efforts as a staple of weekly training. This makes sure the extreme end of the intensity spectrum is addressed, and it does so in a context-specific approach.
In terms of a pure sprint workout where you would do 5-10 all-out sprint efforts with substantial rest in between, we have had these in the past, but found they were rarely completed, and in addition to that, they are typically best executed with a team or group to provide a realistic context.
You’re, of course, welcome to add sprints to your training. In that case, we’d recommend doing them at the end of one of your endurance rides. One session per week should be enough. ![]()
Let me know if this helps and if you have any other questions along the way. ![]()
Best of luck & happy riding!
