Train or taper before MTB vacation

New to training and my 3 month FTP plan is over a month before my MTB vacation. Looking for what to do for that month, extend that specialty phase a couple weeks and then do the week of endurance like most of the phases end with right before vacation.

That sounds like a good plan to extend your specialty phase and stick to endurance the week before. You may even want to treat the week before like a taper before an A race. I know anytime I go on a MTB trip I’m pretty much riding every day, and usually longer than normal. So you really want to make sure you’re fresh going into it, but some “opener” style workouts could be nice to help keep your top end sharp.

You could try setting up an event based training plan with your MTB vacation as a your “A” event stage race?

My plan into the early season B crit races has me doing 2 months of specialty, so I would guess if you do 3 weeks of specialty, recovery week, 2 weeks of specialty and then something else, that’d be fine?

It sounds like your vacation is kind of an A event though, so maybe give that a shot?

Yeah. You can always edit an existing plan you’re following. You can edit any of the plan parameters and dates, and it will adapt accordingly from where you are.

Awesome thanks for the feedback. Again really new to training so I need to do some research to understand “taper”. Intuitively i though thats the week of endurance that follows each stage within the programs.

For me, it would depend on the nature of the MTB “vacation”. If it’s going to be a competitive smash fest with long hard miles every day, I agree with the recommendation of putting it on your calendar as a stage race or target event. But if it’s family style fun cruising on the trails (with minimal opportunities to ride hard), I’ll schedule a biking vacation as a rest week and load up the training stress leading into it. Basically, schedule the vacation week in a way that it fits the type of riding you’ll be doing for the bulk of the time.
