Long podcasts are awesome as long as they are good, and the Trainer Road pod is awesome!
BOOO!. If the podcast eats up my brain for 2 whole 1.25-hour rides a week, that’s more entertainment than if it only eats 3/4 of an hour.
Game of Thrones is over. Bosch is out of season and I’m caught up. Black Sails is a few years old, over, and I’m caught up. I killed The Wire long before I had a trainer. I’m not paying another premium channel for Breaking Bad or Sons of Anarchy. Soprano’s looks mildly interesting, but wrapping my head around glorifying Jersey mob-trash is hard to do. I’ve watched the full catalog of 2020 NBC Gold one-day races, abbreviated as they may be. I’ve watched Paris-Roubaix and LBL on YouTube, going back like 5 or 10 years depending on quality and availability.
Let Chad talk in peace.
The content is fantastic but I agree 2.5 hours is over the top. My eyes glaze over when Coach Chad goes into his deep dives. Nothing against him as I completely respect his vast expertise, I’m just not into hard core exercise science. Maybe shoot for 1.5 - 2.0 hours tops per episode.
I think it’s not too long enough. What’s wrong with listening it to in multiple sessions?
I like how the podcast has developed, and especially since I spend a lot more time at home now, I have more time to listen to podcasts. Before Amber became a regular host, most of the scientific deep dives were done by Chad. And now Amber does half of them, which I really like. They are both very knowledgable with slightly different profiles, which makes their contributions more additive rather than overlapping. But that contributed to the episodes growing longer. And there is more (entertaining) banter. If some people don’t like that, well, that’s a matter of style.
Both are epic and worth binging for a month without hesitation.
I listen to all the podcasts in my car to and from work, lengh doesn’t matter at all. Just start and stop.
not long enough
I like it and as long as the quality stays high, then please keep going.
I just fast forward through the segments I don’t like.
How do people fast forward a podcast? How do you know when to stop? I’m guessing here, but I think a lot of people watch on YouTube where you can see a breakdown of the episode and just jump forward.
When you’re driving in a car or riding on the trainer, you can’t see the topics and you can’t easily fast forward (15 seconds, listen to see if the topic is over, 15 seconds, listen to see if the topic is over, 15 seconds…and my commute is over and I spent the whole 45 minute drive tapping the fast forward button )
Many podcasts have chapter markers, and I wish TR would use them, too. They also act as a great table of contents. So even if you remember that a topic was covered during a specific episode, finding it isn’t easy.
The last one was kind of long but I fast forward a lot. Anytime they talk about race tactics, Nate on carbs, plan modifications, and I skip over all the product updates and job announcements at the beginning.
I skipped over all the women’s issues stuff in the last episode because it’s not applicable to me.
I love any Coach Chad sciency or training talk.
+1
I agree with this.
it is getting longer but i dont think it is too long. I listen on soundcloud and if i am short on time i just mouse over the notes and click on the topics i am interested in. I enjoy the casual banter as well, it’s weird the things i hear during an episode that instantly motivate me that i wouldn’t have expected. I think a lot of that good stuff that happens organically through their back and forth would be lost if they just locked it in to a tight timeline.
No problem with the length. My only complaint of late is both Chad and Amber doing deep dives. I just finished coach Chad’s contribution to the breathing question on my way into work today. At the start of this segment he mentioned Amber’s notes were even longer (how is that possible?). Will likely skip (which is fine) but I just think they need to coordinate better on what/how much ought to be presented.
My preference would be to have chad continue to do the deep dives and have Amber focus on her experiences as a pro-racer. After all, that is where she adds the greatest value to the show since she is the only one who was a pro.
Hard disagree here! Her expertise as a trainer and researcher has been super valuable to me, I learn something useful and/or interesting every time she gets going. (MYOKINES?!)
Agreed. I think Amber’s Deep Dives and contributions to the Deep Dives have been just as well done as Chad’s are. I’ve always enjoyed Chad’s Deep Dives - as a researcher, I really like the way he breaks down complex biological concepts (it’s something a lot of people in the field could be better at) - but Amber is really, really good at it as well. I’d hate to lose her contributions on that front.
Honestly, I don’t have an issue with the longer 2ish hour podcast format. I think the past few weeks have been running longer, but I wonder how much of that is due to the new format in light of the ongoing pandemic. Either way, I personally don’t view the length as a problem, but I don’t see eliminating some of Amber’s really insightful contributions to the physiology Deep Dives as the answer to others’ issue with the length.
I don’t mind the length but find I pick and choose in the episodes and then between episodes. As suggested in another thread, bookmarking the episodes would be very helpful for targetted listening.
I know this is aviailale in Soundcloud, but owuld appreicate it for Overcast or other podcasting apps.
