Clinical research has shown that there is no such thing as an ‘optimal’ level or range of testosterone for athletic performance. Among other things/considerations, tests of athletes at world championship and Olympic level have shown championship caliber performances from athletes with measured testosterone levels throughout the normal physiological range (i.e. “low” level within normal range and “high” level within normal range).

Furthermore, conducting physiological testing for informational purposes without correlated clinical symptoms is worse than useless, it’s actually harmful.

So what’s wrong with bringing your testosterone levels up to levels as high as when you were in your 20s. by taking supplementation?

Assuming you are not cheating in sports, it’s not clear if anything is “wrong” with it.

But there is no data on whether 10 or 20 years of unnecessary hormone supplementation will give you cancer or some other issue down the road. So, you take your risks if you go to the anti-aging doc.

Well, “very scientific” is not the apt and snappy comeback that you believe it to be.

You asked “what is wrong” about supplementing with testosterone to bring a middle-aged man’s levels back up to what they were in his twenties. Now, “wrong,” a it was used in this question, is a matter of ethics, not a matter of science. Of course, the word can and is used in science to refer to the validity of conclusions drawn from data, or the validity of method. Such is not the sense in which you used it. No, in your question, it is a matter of ethics.

I would not be so prolix as to draw upon a neo-Aristolean strand of thinking to offer a more comprehensive argument for why it would be unethical. I don’t think the stance deserves that serious of a consideration.

No, it’s just douchebaggery. If there is no underlying, serious medical condition which would justify the use of the drugs, then it’s just vain, vain, douchebaggery.

It doesn’t seem to be an ethical issue unless you are cheating in a sport.

If you need it medically nothing.

If you need it medically and race you’re cheating and that sucks.

If you don’t need it medically and race you’re a wanker.

I have quite a bit of experience with guys who use testosterone and say they need it and continue to race without a TUE or recTUE. Have lost respect for them even though I think they are good human beings otherwise. The one common thing they say to me is “you’ll do it too one day when you get old enough.” To which I say if so I won’t race anymore.

I just quit my team because one of the guys running it told another team mate a number of guys were on T. Some admitted some didn’t. I can’t prove anything but, several of us were so bummed and disgusted we just left. I have no data but, I think the number of masters over 40 on T gets more and more diluted with age. WAG but, 50+/60+ it wouldn’t surprise me if 50% of men are using. And once you understand the difference in performance of someone using vs. when they were clean it is just a huge bummer. Very hard to find motivation even though this is just a hobby. But, why compete when you can’t compete unless you’re using it as well?

Anyways, please don’t race while using is my soap box.

Some testosterone boosters do work, they just aren’t banned yet.

So we don’t want hormones in our chicken or beef, but I’ll take a shot of it in my butt? We are so schizophrenic !

There are all sorts of ways to increase T naturally. I’ve read a number of articles where the person increased T by a significant percentage (like they doubled it). One can google for various recipies but here are a few:

sunlight - especially chest exposure and testicles - you can also use near infrared light therapy in your home - joovy light

lift weights

magnesium, zinc, & D supplementation - btw, a large portion of the population is deficient. D-see #1 sunlight

Lose weight - the more fat you carry the less T you will have circulating

Avoid estrogens from plastics - don’t put hot food in it or use plastic in the microwave

Nobody here is winning the TDF or the olympics. Take whatever you want. Not sure why people are so bent up over competing for irrelevant races.

I’m just stating the truth. Nobody cares or will remember if you won your local crit race or placed 1st in your AG in the city’s marathon. When one day you’re old and reminisce about your youth, you yourself won’t care and neither will your kids and grandkids. They will remember if you’re kind, provided, you lived your life happily and that you were a good athlete.

If you want to get angry and emotional about it, that’s on you.
