Hi, I’m new here. I am having difficulty increasing my FTP in TR. I have been riding with TR for a few months now. I’m sure I made many mistakes and deviations from the plan, but I am kind of dissappointed that there is virtually no progress on the FTP front. I’m male, mid 40s, I train 3 times per week - tuesdays and thursdays on an indoor trainer + an unstructured outside ride on Saturday. Here is my calendar:
I’d be interested to hear your advice and insights.
1.If you want fast progression choose aggressive training plan, DO ABSOLUTELY NOT deviate from the plan and be honest with your feedback at the end of each session
2. A more progressive plan will take longer WAY longer and you still need to stick to the plan.
nutrition and recovery is KEY.
I gradually lost 40 watts on my FTP over 12 months by not having the structure TR provides. Got them back in record time with the aggressive TR plan but sessions are brutal and no chance I can do any other training between them and I MUST consume carbohydrates during the sessions otherwise I Fail or don’t recover in time for the next one.
Depending on your training history, 2 structured rides a week isn’t a huge amount of volume. The group ride on the weekend adds volume, but it’s likely not structured volume so won’t do as much good as an equivalent workout, and if you’re not careful and it turns into a slug fest then it may do more harm than good by adding fatigue to the workouts in the week meaning you’re not performing at your best.
As others have said, with only 2 structured workouts a week it’s going to be key to nail those two, consistently every week and even then, I imagine you’ll come to a point where it’s not possible to raise your FTP much more without more volume. For reference, I’ve been training 3 1-1.5 hour structured rides a week for a long time and it’s a struggle to push beyond about 3 W/kg doing that without adding more volume. Genetics factors in of course so some may be able to achieve more, but a volume limited FTP ceiling is a real thing. If you can’t add volume, you can increase the aggression slider on the plan, but it may just add fatigue rather than giving more FTP progress
Lastly, FTP isn’t everything. How’s your durability, can you stick with efforts on the group ride longer? Can you hold on in the red longer? Can you stick with more attacks than you used to? Is your weight dropping giving you better W/kg? There are lots of other gains you can get without moving the FTP needle.
I notice you’re marking a lot of your workouts as moderate or easy. Also, your training approach is set to moderate. I would be either changing the training approach to make the adaptations more aggressive or picking harder alternates to teach the AI what you are capable of.
Having said that, you’re getting a lot of red days. Do you truly feel red on those days? If not, it might also need to learn your capabilities. Be careful though. It’s easy to swing too hard the other way and burn out.
