Strava Sues Garmin

Trainerroad directly connects to Garmin.

Doesn’t TR have the option of direct feed from Garmin Connect? I know you can push TR workouts to Garmin.

I use Strava as the mother ship for my training data and I don’t plan to change any time soon. I couldn’t care less about them having a spat with Garmin. Most companies do a bunch of stupid stuff, silly lawsuits aren’t in the same league as things like unethical labor practices (which would steer me away from a company).

Our team and other local clubs use strava to organize rides and stay connected, it’s pretty engrained in the cycling ecosystem. Much like platforms like Facebook, Strava sucks in so many ways, but they have the numbers. The value of Strava as a company is the huge sticky user base, the platform is pretty meh.

Strava, like Facebook relies on the network effect. As people leave in numbers the network effect also applies.

The problem is, as long as there isn’t a new shared platform to share rides, segment PRs, etc on, most people won’t leave Strava behind. It’s a social network first and foremost, the fitness part is secondary. Without other means to boast your PRs, there will be no network effect. Facebook only really started declining once Snapchat came around

Some folks may cancel their subscriptions, but that’s likely the most impact there’ll be. And as long as Strava gets the data and can boast it’s extensive user base, it will sell both of them. What they are worth will be seen when they actually manage their IPO. And after IPO it’s phase 2 and 3 of enshitification anyway. That’ll be where it really becomes clear how strong of a platform Strava is.

For many riders segments and boasting PRs plays no part in their use of Strava. I wouldn’t underestimate what will happen if Garmin blocks access to its API by Strava.

Strava is going public on the stock exchange soon. They’re doing everything they can to get Garmin to buy them

I’m happy for Strava to stop claiming my data as theirs.

Except for their API integration update last Dec made it useless for this… Classic case of not knowing what you’re good at.

Garmin Connect already has some of the features of Strava. I wonder how difficult it would be (without infringing on any patents, of course ) for Garmin to open their platform to devices from more brands, and then offer premium features to Garmin device owners and people willing to pay for a subscription.

Garmin Connect was originally created to be a Strava competitor and then they ended up making a deal instead and cooperated. So they could do that, but Garmin didn’t really grok UX like Strava did at that time. Maybe they still don’t?

The internet, know to be wrong at times, claims that Connect was released in 2008 and Strava 2009.

Alright well the current incarnation was designed to be a strava competitor. I don’t remember what it was before, maybe just a sync platform?

Express was (still is) the syncing app and connect was the viewing the workouts app? I think early connect was just local and not web based? Can’t recall so could be wrong on that it has been so long. They had the heat maps before strava according to this thread/Ray so maybe there was more too it online than I was remembering.

Dear Developer,

We’re writing to inform you of a change to the Strava API Agreement. Garmin’s new API Brand Guidelines now require even downstream developers that do not connect directly with Garmin to include brand attribution when data is sourced from a Garmin device.

This Garmin requirement is reflected in a new Section 2.4 in our API Agreement (reproduced below).

Garmin Data Attribution: Activity data obtained through the Strava API may include data that requires attribution to Garmin. Therefore, if your application displays information derived from Garmin-sourced data, you must display attribution to Garmin in the form and manner required by Garmin’s brand guidelines.

Garmin’s API Brand Guidelines are scheduled to take effect on November 1, 2025. If you have questions regarding Garmin’s attribution requirements, the deadline, or your compliance with the requirements, we encourage you to reach out to connect-support@developer.garmin.com.

Best,

The Strava API Team

Interesting. This is what Strava’s Chief Product Officer said on Reddit they were “actively trying to prevent.” Are they folding?

What choice does Strava have but to fold on this issue, unless this is a hill they want to die (as a company) on. Seriously. Strava only exists because athletes capture data on other companies’ devices, and these other companies make it “easy” to send this data to Strava. And Garmin is the 800lb gorilla in terms of producing data that is sent to Strava.

Do any customer’s actually care that a garmin logo shows up on their activity in Strava? But I guess Strava leadership has little interest in customer’s feedback unless we all threaten to leave when they do something stupid

Strava can eff right off. I’m so sick of their stupid antics. Cancelled my subscription, I can do everything Strava can do for free on other apps. I don’t care about segments anymore, I had only kept my subscription up because my routes are all there. I can export those along with my entire ride history, so buh-bye :waving_hand:

its my understanding that they will delete critical posts on their forums as well. I posted something once and then it disappeared

When they made the API changes last year, their announcement on their forum ended with a reminder that “posts requesting or attempting to have Strava revert business decisions will not be permitted.” That’s how much they care about their users’ opinions, I guess.
