What I understand from intervals.icu is that they will continue to import workouts from Strava, but no one else can see that workout in intervals.icu. That includes your coach…
garmin connect is very restrictive on what apps can write on Garmin connect. Sadly apple isnt one of them. I’ll look into trainingpeaks.
Yep. I’ve seen this issue with zwift specifically. I guess I’ll have to dual record. Sucks to lose the elevation and distance data though. Nice when it all matches up
RunGap does, but TR is not one of their large list of integrations, and it only works with Apple users. Just in case this might work for you, here’s a short list:
Apple Health, Polar, Garmin, Coros, Hammerhead, Peloton, Wahoo, Stryd, Zwift, TrainerDay, Training Peaks, RunKeeper, Strava, Runtastic, Suunto, Adidas, and many others (40+)
I definitely don’t like this idea of Strava claiming ownership of my data and limiting how I decide I want to use it.
I mainly use Strava to follow to friends and see what activities they do. And the segments are kind of nice. But I’m cancelling my subscription. I already have RideiWithGps which I like for routes anyway and they’ve started to add more segment stuff anyway.
Has anybody got any ideas what Strava gains from this move? I don’t buy all this bumf about data protection. Data protection is what all companies quote when they don’t want to have to explain anything.
Perhaps everyone who objects to this could request a data dump of all their activities from Strava. That may send a message if sufficient people do it.
Fortunately my 12 month subscription as just run out so I won’t be renewing
Before this was all automatic, when a file had to be downloaded from a device and reuploaded to other sites, I thought a program to automate it would be helpful. WattsUp would have been the name. Then it all got automated. Maybe that idea should be looked at again.
My guess is that it’s a combination of multiple things. Two I can think of off the top of my head:
- The recent issues they’ve encountered with safety due to lack of data privacy (examples - secret US military locations were found due to activity recording; Kaitlin Armstrong tracking Mo Wilson)
- Eliminating competitors due to Strava thinking they can build out their own AI coaching/feedback services
Would love to see the panic on Strava’s faces if Garmin and Wahoo published the same API agreement.
Not much functionality of Strava left it they were both to limit what 3rd parties like Strava could do with data originating from those services.
Rainmaker just posted on YT. He’s not happy. His main point was, does Strava sit around and think about how to irritate and drive away their customers?
I was doing basically this when I unsubscribed from Strava. I used the free version of Ride with GPS, which also has segments. You just don’t have “live segments”. So, you can check after your ride and do a near apples-to-apples comparison.
Yup, it’s posted above (along with the article link which I added) and plenty of discussion about his clarifications and comments.
According to the Strava post, these changes were scheduled to take effect on November 11th, right? Somehow i’m still seeing my outdoor workouts/rides syncing to my TR calendar. The rides even say that the source workout was from Strava. What am i missing?
Imagine if they put as much effort into improving their product.
I think Strava have given everyone 30days to fall in line before in order to keep the API access.
Within 30 days of November 11th. Apps have a month (with Thanksgiving week in between) to implement the changes required.
Yeah. Strava has done this a couple of times which is annoying. I have too many subscriptions as it as.
The more I think about the more brave/stupid I think Strava are being considering they don’t actually have a means of generating any of this data themselves.
They are the ultimate 3rd party - they are just storing/analysing data.
Edit: I did forget about direct recording by the app…
I think/hope this is great news for me.
I’ve long felt that the best value from Strava was their place at the center of the data integration hub for endurance athletes.
As a result I feared they would block this except via premium, forcing me to pay for a service I otherwise don’t value highly at all
However, by removing this functionality they will force other players to integrate with each other, or at least open their APIs
Certainly in the short term this will be painful, but longer term it should, hopefully, lead to a more open data flow between the other players in the market whereas a paywall, with their current market dominance, could’ve irreparably damaged this possibility
Some people record walks/runs/etc directly on Strava (my husband and daughter), but these are obviously not the power users nor the ones likely to pay Strava any money.
