Strava API Agreement Update

What a really crappy move by strava. 30 days to comply right at the holidays, and they blindside all these partners. It almost forces TR to work overtime to get new APIs and things working with Zwift and others before everything falls apart.

Not going to renew my yearly strava premium membership. Crappy business move

So I can remind myself how to transfer .fit files from my Wahoo head unit in to TrainerRoad, re-sign a year of TR, ignore Strava and carry on unchanged?

It must be a sign of my age, because I am less and less capable of understanding legalese anymore…

But as it pertains to TR and myself, any activities I do using my Garmin or Hammerhead units are automatically imported into TR.

  • Import Garmin Activities (Last 5 years)
  • Import completed Hammerhead activities

What it won’t do is import my unstructured rides on Zwift, since that connection / communication occurs through Strava. So if I want those rides to be included in my TR analysis (RLGL, AIFTP, etc), I will need to ensure I record them on a head unit while riding Zwift.

Is my understanding correct?

That’s my understanding. And it seems the new integration with Zwift just got more important as well

I could be wrong, but since Zwift sends completed rides to Garmin Connect, if you have Garmin Connect connected to TR, wouldn’t TR pull Zwift rides from Garmin Connect? I haven’t tried it, though, but maybe someone from TR can confirm. (I imagine this will be moot once Zwift integration is live, though.)

Sure, that works for those with Garmin Connect in use. But I and likely many others on the Wahoo side at least, don’t have that option.

Is any way that people who are in a year contract can cancel that since they unilaterally changed the terms and conditions? This is not what I signed up for!

Seems to be a question for Strava support.

Seems like a question for good lawyers. I highly doubt.strava support will be helpful

any thoughts on what I can use instead of strava as a central data hub? Most of my workouts are done on trainerroad, so I’m not too concerned about strava limiting API usage for TR, but I have other non-cycling workouts like running and such, and I use Apple for that. I used to have Apple push runs to strava, and then have TR download runs from Strava, so I will need to find a way around it.

I recommend reading the whole @dcrainmaker article linked above, it’s excellent as usual. I’ll quote key sections relevant to TR users. My take is that 1) TR needs to get its Wahoo and Zwift integrations built out ASAP, 2) I will not be renewing my Strava premium, and 3) Can TR or a third party provide some minimal tools to see monthly/annual totals, tag equipment etc, all within the TR calendar interface?

From DCR:
"In the case of platforms like TrainerRoad, I suspect they’ll simply disable Strava altogether, and force everyone through direct connections. This will be fine for Garmin users, but as of right now there’s no inbound connection for Wahoo users (though that’s coming). And for people pushing Zwift workouts to TrainerRoad, that too will break until TrainerRoad completes their API connection in January.

But that won’t solve the larger issue TrainerRoad and other companies face, which is having to pull in the other 3rd party workout data types. TrainerRoad doesn’t have a connection to Suunto. Or Polar. Or AmazFit. Or Google. Or Fitbit. Or…I could do this all day. Strava solved that, to the benefit of both consumers and all companies involved.

Now Strava seems to want to own the “AI space” with its always-helpful AI insights that simply re-word my activity titles and tell me something vaguely positive but usually wrong."

As mentioned, Garmin Connect is about the most obvious I know.
Perhaps Training Peaks is a similar level without a component association?

My membership runs to July 25.

I’m struggling to find a coherent understanding of Stravas strategy here and their desired end game? I would suggest a large portion of users who subscribe also subscribe to other platforms who now can’t integrate. Amazingly arrrogant move by Strava.

Long ago when I was young I subsidised my income by working in a pub. The landlord always looked after his regulars, he knew then and I learnt a valuable lesson. If you don’t look after your customers , someone else will and it’s God’s own job getting them back.

Maybe when we are a few years older we will remember strava in the same way as blackberry, aol etc.

I tried to withhold being dramatic about this until some more info came out but the DC video above basically confirmed worst possible scenario. I guess my Strava money is going somewhere else now.

Also, this made me LOL because of how true it is:

Strava almost certainly has designs on the AI training space imo. Weird that they would do this before having something actually useable in place but who knows why they do anything the way they do. What I will say is, it’s time to remind them who the data actually belongs to.

Never know until you try. It’s entirely possible that they would do a prorated refund. If so, job done.

If not, then you can try other routes. But I can’t see heading down that road until you take the first and most direct path at least.

Yeah, hopefully it means the integration will work both ways. TR sending workouts directly to Zwift and then Zwift sending any unstructured virtual rides to TR.

Garmin connect isn’t a solution because it doesn’t forward activities it receives from other apps. I am also not sure Garmin is a likely candidate to fill this gap in general because they’re pretty much into the walled garden themselves.

I am actually not aware of any other platform besides Strava that forwards activities from other platforms.

What I understand from intervals.icu is that they will continue to import workouts from Strava, but no one else can see that workout in intervals.icu. That includes your coach…

garmin connect is very restrictive on what apps can write on Garmin connect. Sadly apple isnt one of them. I’ll look into trainingpeaks.

Yep. I’ve seen this issue with zwift specifically. I guess I’ll have to dual record. Sucks to lose the elevation and distance data though. Nice when it all matches up
