I’ve long felt that the best value from Strava was their place at the center of the data integration hub for endurance athletes.
As a result I feared they would block this except via premium, forcing me to pay for a service I otherwise don’t value highly at all
However, by removing this functionality they will force other players to integrate with each other, or at least open their APIs
Certainly in the short term this will be painful, but longer term it should, hopefully, lead to a more open data flow between the other players in the market whereas a paywall, with their current market dominance, could’ve irreparably damaged this possibility
Some people record walks/runs/etc directly on Strava (my husband and daughter), but these are obviously not the power users nor the ones likely to pay Strava any money.
That’s what I thought but I checked my last Zwift ride and it uploaded directly to GC and Strava but TR pulled it from Strava. I assume it could pull it from GC as it does for outdoor rides?
EDIT - ignore this - just seen above that GC does not forward 3rd party activities on
The 2 AI platforms that I know (Athletics and AI Endurance) don’t really want to use Strava as the files don’t contain HRV which they apparently use to analyse the workouts.
This was crazy news to us, too. We’re still understanding the full implications; but for now:
Good news - We’ve been syncing Garmin Connect for a long while now. When we have both a GC and Strava ride file, we de-dupe them and use the GC .FIT file for processing/training/displaying. This is because Strava edits the data and takes a few things out.
More good news - We were already working on pulling rides from Zwift directly into TrainerRoad.
Even more good news - We had direct pulling from Wahoo on the roadmap, but now that’s obviously moved up to be worked in parallel with the Zwift integration.
For now, I recommend Garmin users make sure they have Garmin Connect synced.
Just a quick question, if you are able to answer at this time: does the Zwift API let you pull all Zwift rides, including races, free rides, and non-TR workouts? Or just TR workouts done in Zwift?
True, but I basically took that as read as we were on this forum. If TR does look at HRV in the background, keeping an eye on potential future developments, then they won’t get any info from Strava on it.
Sounds good, but also, there are many other AI apps out there: Join, Spoked, Fast Cat, Humango, 2peak, etc. I think most companies are at least exploring it
If I’m honest with myself it was inertia keeping me from ditching strava premium before so in a way this has given me the impetus to cancel my subscription renewal (although it remains active until it expires and you can resubscribe easily enough). They ask you why you want to cancel so I told them it was this decision. If enough people do it they may get the message.
Am I right that TR could, in theory, still import outdoor rides from Strava but exclude them from AI-FTP analysis? That’s obviously not an ideal solution, but given that Strava is giving everyone 30 days to comply, and presumably there will be many devices for which TR doesn’t have a direct pull interface available, I wonder if it might be a band aid?
I got mine after 15 mins earlier this evening. Make sure you are checking th email address that you sign in to Strava with. Mines an old address that I no longer use but still have access to.
Yep, I did the exact same thing. I just renewed in September, so it’s partly symbolic, but sub cancellations do get attention when they hit sufficient volume.
@Nate_Pearson is this prohibition backdated? That is, is there any issue with all the existing data that’s populating my TR calendar that came from my Wahoo via Strava? I like being able to go back and check old rides via TR and would hate to lose that once the Strava uncoupling happens.
