Strava API Agreement Update

Ugh, I just found out I cannot disable syncing from and to Strava yet: neither my outdoor rides (recorded on my Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt) nor my strength workouts (recorded on my Wahoo Rival) would be synced. I could live without having my strength workouts uploaded to TR, but I need my outdoor rides in my calendar.

Ive never used but I think folk said Dropbox was a work around.

Could you just connect it directly to a computer via a USB cable, browse for the new .fit file & upload that? That’s how I get everything of mine from my Lezyne head unit & vívoactive 4s watch onto Strava or into TR.

I used to use Strava for data recording for years — until they nixed Bluetooth sensor support. I saw that as Strava saying they don’t want to be the app that records data.

Fine, so they should nuke the several options that are still in place, apparently.

No, no. I’m just saying that that’s when I stopped using Strava‘s app and it seems they have deemphasized this feature. I have been using Wahoo‘s app for runs and stuff before getting the Rival.

Has sensor support returned? Strava‘s reasoning back then made no sense to me.

I am not certain, but I don’t think so. Even without that though, people still record runs and walks via the Strava app. My point is that if they don’t want “Strava-based” activities, they need to kill the stuff that still works even without separate devices paired.

I think we are both trying to find logic and reason in Strava’s business decisions :stuck_out_tongue:

IMHO their current solution (recording without sensors) is a half-hearted solution that neither satisfies people who are the least bit serious nor do they cut the functionality altogether (despite sports and smartwatches being more popular than when I last used Strava’s activity recorder).

They’ve done some pretty stupid sh1t. This might be the cherry. For now anyway. It’s a the only feature I’d pay to use. I’d have no problem if they said storing and transporting data all over cost. Please subscribe if you want to use this feature. Nonetheless, I downloaded Garmin connect app and it does everything I need. Maybe I’ll buy a thousand dollar watch so I can use some of its features! Ok, that’s a stretch but you are spot on.

I’m actually surprised that they didn’t consider monetizing the syncing to other platforms as opposed to shutting it down altogether. It would have required no work at all since they already had it in place and could have been a possible revenue stream by encouraging people to upgrade to paid accounts.

Probably would still have been bad press. Nobody is happy about something they once got free now costing them money. I agree with other posters here that my data is my data. That being said, it doesn’t appear Strava is disagreeing with that either but just that they are no longer going to facilitate other companies making money off of a service they have been providing for free. If that service is valuable, I don’t understand why they wouldn’t charge for it vs getting rid of it altogether.

That would be easier if I could browse the bike computer directly from the TrainerRoad upload page. I’ll give it a try, thanks.

I got that after I let my subscription lapse. I was ‘assured’ that I’d get a link to download MY data, and waited a week and got nothing. I tried to do it again, must have been just short of a week, and got that message. I waited longer and got the ‘We’ll get it done and send a link’ message, and again never got a link. Mysteriously after I reupped my subscription, downloading worked fine.

Maybe it was just me, but I sure got the impression that they wouldn’t break a sweat to help former subscribers, or potentially members. Nice way to behave. Who runs that company? A bunch of three year olds?

I see his post as being ‘downloading all of their data’, which Strava seems hesitant to allow for certain users/members. But the whole ‘we have your data, it’s now ours’ needs to be tested in court, IMO. Strava is providing a ‘service’, and no part of that service should involve assuming ‘ownership’ of their user’s data. It IS the users data. It should be available to download at any time by the user, there should be no ‘well, you aren’t paying us so you don’t get it’ at all… There should be no delay. You request it, they cough it up, PERIOD. Likewise, if they provide a ‘service’ for interpreting their users data and seek to change that mutual agreement, they should have to provide something like 90 or 120 days notice for users and others that access the user’s data to make changes so their process either keeps working, or some other process can be figured out, even and including a mass exodus of Strava’s users, AND THEIR DATA. People leaving Strava should expect that their data is flushed from Strava servers as well. I like the EU’s user data protection law quite a lot. A user wants out, they can request a full flush of their data too. Again, as so many have said ‘IT’S THEIR DATA!’ there is no ‘yeah, they gave it to us’ in that equation.

Requested download of all of my Strava activities but the email link to the archive results in Can’t Find the Server. Has anyone been able to access their archive download link?

You’re welcome to try to test it in court, but I’d recommend reading the Strava user agreement first.

Also, the delays in compiling and downloading individual user’s data will be dependent on the current server load, queued download requests, and that user’s amount of data. It’s not Strava deciding to withhold certain users’ data.

For those of us recording things on Apple Watches, I’m happy to say that HealthFit → Export to iCloud → Import New Activity via the TR website was a pretty smooth process all on the phone. It’ll still be nice when/if we get Apple Health and Fitness direct syncing, though.
