Strava API Agreement Update

And why shouldn’t they just push data recorded on their devices? As I said, they aren’t restricting you sharing your data wherever you want.

I agree that its not Strava’s fault, but like others have said I wonder if the bad press was at least partial motivation. And you never know what happens behind the scenes, maybe there was pressure from the government even though logically, and legally it isnt their fault.

Whoops, my connection from Garmin Connect to Strava has broken.

Read this update from David over at intervals.icu.
Seems like it is not quite as bad as everyone assumed.

I just stumbled on the new api licence on reddit, is this all just much ado about nothing based on a misunderstanding from Ray Maker?

“You must always respect Strava users and comply with their privacy choices. This includes not sharing a Strava user’s data with other users, end users of your application, or third parties without explicit consent.”

So that seems to “fix / unbreak” the coach related issue, but does not address the AI / ML / whutevaStravadecidesisspecialandshouldonlybedonebythem catch that affects TR & others.

That part was already in the old licence agreement

Trainer road is pulling in my outdoor workouts from Garmin connect successfully, but not free rides on Zwift that have shown up on Garmin connect. I have re-authorized several times, what am I missing that is keeping activities other than outdoor rides from being pulled into Trainer Road?

Thanks

I’m not particularly tech savvy and use a Wahoo head unit for outdoor rides, which up until now synced to Strava to TR automatically.

Last night I disabled syncing between Wahoo and Strava and between Strava and TR. Today my outdoor ride showed up on my Elemnt app history - I then tapped the share icon top right when reviewing the ride, emailed myself a .fit file and on my laptop downloaded that .fit file from my email server. On the TR desktop (not the app) under Career I go: past activities, upload activity button and either select the .fit file or drag it.

This is a bit clunky but my ride is now in TR, visible in the calendar and with the normal analysis functionality. Presumably TR is still allowed to use the data for its machine learning algorithms to inform red-light green-light and my AIFTP.

Bit clunky but really easy. I’m sure I could look in to using Dropbox to automate it but honestly it only took a few seconds. I’m looking forward to TR’s considered take on all this in due course.

This!

A lot of posts I have read seem to focus solely on the can’t see others data but completely gloss over or totally miss the analytics part.

Garmin Connect only pushes activities recorded on Garmin devices, not activities pushed to Garmin Connect. In other words, if Zwift pushes an activity to Garmin Connect, Garmin Connect won’t push it elsewhere. It’s a limitation imposed by Garmin.

If that’s the case I wouldn’t blame it on Ray, but on Strava’s poor communication; if you refer back to the original post by Strava at the top of this thread, this is all framed as new changes and using different wording than the agreement in the diff (e.g. they left out the “without explicit consent” bit, which seems rather important). I’m curious when this diff was taken; this, and David’s update at Intervals.icu above makes me wonder if they quietly updated the agreement after the uproar.

100% agree. This “we were just misunderstood” doesn’t pass the sniff test for me. The original notification (poorly & inadequately addressed per Ray’s first email asking for clarification prior to posting his video) was closely followed with the 1st update (that he also addressed as seemingly not accurate), and now this apparent 2nd update (nothing is really different…) that there’s much ado about nothing?

Sure, could be incompetence from the Strava Coms/Mkt depts and just a mix-up, but it seems more like damage control to my eyes, especially when we consider their spotty track record here.

I hope there is a clarification from Strava and this is all a misunderstanding, however I suspect not.

Personally, the direct connection to TR from my devices is not an option as they are not all supported.

With adaptive training and red light green light I’ll need to get all my non TR activities into TR manually which is going to be onerous.

Given that that Stava shut down any attempting to challenge and revert business decisions via forums etc. I think I’ll draft a Sudo complaint in the form of General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) request stating that I am unhappy with the API changes given that I have granted third party application the right to request my data. I would therefore like to understand If you ( Strava ) are transferring my personal data to a third country or an international organisation, I request to be informed about the appropriate safeguards according to Article 46 GDPR concerning the transfer.

I will also ask them to make my personal data which I have provided to them, available to me in a structured, commonly used and machine-readable format as laid down in Article 20(1) GDPR.

I’ll try and word it in such a way that is should includes my ride data.

If other users follow suit it ‘should’ be trivial for Strava to respond to given this this affects less than .1% of their user base

I canceled Premium last night. I sent a nice email to support explaining why I canceled and requesting a partial refund for my remaining months. They refunded me in full within hours.

I’ll still use Strava, but at this time premium doesn’t meet my needs as many say due to API among other reasons. I’ll still use it to post pictures of my outside rides and that will be sufficient for my 3 followers.

My suspicion is that Strava’s lawyers wrote a very broad new set of rules around data sharing, but that they may now reach out to individual apps to grant their specific uses as “exceptions” given the backlash here.

I would say that the wording in the original release would prohibit coaching by Intervals or anyone else. Strava has now “clarified their intent” directly to Intervals, but I don’t think they’ve actually changed the wording of the rule. This seems like a “prohibit everything then grant exceptions to some” approach. I wonder if they’re also in touch with TR to let them know that their application is OK, but any future app doing AI/ML stuff will have to be vetted and approved by Strava.

Again, this is a bad and annoying way to do this, but also consistent with Strava’s past MO.

Even with this supposed “backtracking” by Strava, at least with regards to coaching, it still exposes a massive weak point in the industry. I don’t think it’s smart for any company to rely on strava as the middle man data source anymore, not when they’ve demonstrated this sort of behavior. All that implicit trust in strava being the “hub” is gone

This. The damage is done, not just in lost revenue but in developer and partner goodwill. Even if they were to completely roll back these changes there is no reason anyone should rely on Strava as a data source anymore.
