SRAM acquires Hammerhead!

I’m with you, after Garmin 800, 520,1000, 820, and wearing a Fenix 6, can’t be happier with the HH2, and glad for Garmin users who went onto the 830/530 that Karoo helped force Garmin to catch up, competition is good for everybody

Hopefully SRAM will allow Karoo to continue as they have been, well see when the fortnightly updates stop

? Except for the larger capacity battery and bigger storage space, my 510 did everything my 530 does. They did included features found on the more expensive 810s & 1000 to my 530. Is that what you’re referring to? Pretty sure that not because of HH2 but general trend of cheaper silicon.

If you were replying to me, I was referring to the re-routing of navigation where you have to stop at the side of the road and wait for the 820 to “recalculate”, which happens instantly < second on a HH2

It is a bit rubbish that I have all the maps I needed loads and I still have 80% free

I do find all this chest bashing over GPS funny, these are GPS units, enjoy the one you have, what difference does it make what somebody else is using

A realtime leaderboard? I wrote one for another sport a few years ago. I suppose you could consume Garmin live track messages for enrolled athletes and pipe placing back to the head unit?

On a tangent, but SRAM didn’t kill Powertap, the demand dried up with the release of low cost crankarm PM’s (Stages, 4iiii, etc) and much lower cost crank based (Quarq,P2M, Rotor, etc), that issue was compounded by changing standards in road and MTB with Axle types, disc brakes, etc. If Powertaps were in high demand, SRAM would have kept it going, the reality is, no one wanted them any more.

Good question. But at least when it comes to Quarq SRAM has done very well. From what I hear, Quarq has kept its great service (I haven’t had to use that yet).

I always assumed it was about patents, not about products. Hub-based power meters are no longer a thing. Especially since SRAM already has a top notch power meter.

I have only had to contact them once and the service was excellent.

I know they are no longer a thing…I laid out part of the reason above. But the question is how much of it was due to neglect. I’d gladly still ride a PT hub.

IMO, the purchase was about getting into the PM pedal market, but they have pretty much completely screwed that up. And buying Time pedals and even less sense. Whole thing was just weird.

I’m cautiously hopeful that this deal will allow Hammerhead to tamp into SRAM’s much larger retail/ distribution network, and logistics capabilities. Plus that SRAM invests additional $$$ into Hammerhead development to accelerate adding functionality to the Karoo to better position it against Garmin

You don’t get any arguments from me here, I don’t quite understand the full reasoning behind it. But my best guess was that Powertap was dying and SRAM thought it was a good opportunity to snag up power meter-related IP.

I guess SRAM could go the integration route: it seems clear that e. g. suspensions will become electronically controlled (like Spec’s BRAIN) and having a head unit that serves as a control unit with additional analysis features seems like a good idea. Perhaps you can switch modes like you can do on high-performance race cars?

I imagine acquiring Time the idea is for a pedal based power meter leveraged off the Powertap designs but not just for road, but also MTB with the ATAC range of pedals. SRAM is a bit more MTB biased, certainly would sell more groupsets to OEM MTB brands than their road groupsets, so to come to market with a pedal system on par with the Garmin Rally XC pedals, plus with their own head unit with hopefully the Android side more fleshed out, and you have yourself a lot of jigsaw pieces coming together. Watch this space, I think…

But Time is down to almost zero market share. And with SPD patents having expired, buying Time vs. doing a PT SPD pedal is even more dumb.

Didn’t see that coming. Thought hammerhead were doing quite well. They seem to be pretty good at shipping updates regularly

I moved your post under the existing topic.

I agree. The K2 is my favorite computer and the one I use every day. I also have an Edge 1030, Wahoo Bolt, and Stages L50 that just sit in the drawer. All of the K2 features that I use work every day for me without a problem.

every VR headset/solution! it’s amazing and transformative and we barely know what we’re doing with it yet

SRAM has now acquired Velocio Apparel, as well.

Seems an odd fit for a component company, but we’ll see how it plays out.
