Hello all.
To anybody that use vegan recovery drinks after training, I was using the Skratch chocolate recovery mix but now it looks like they discontinued it.
I’ve used there Oat Milk Latte mix but I’m looking for something without caffeine for the later in the day workout.
Does anyone know a good tasting alternative to the Skratch mix?
I’m trying the Hammer Vegan Recoverite now but that thing taste horrible.
Thanks
I started mixing the different flavors (chocolate and vanilla) of some of the recovery powders to alter the taste. Yes, some taste ‘bad’, but through mixing flavors, it can be attenuated. (I don’t mix brands, just flavors) I use the SIS recovery powders after serious wrokouts when a meal isn’t planned within an hour or so. Ride on!!
If you’re at home:
1c frozen mango
2-3 strawberries
1/2c blueberries
Scoop of plant protein powder
1tbsp seeds (flax or chia)
2c chopped kale (spinach works too here if you don’t like kale).
1c OJ
1/2c oat/soy milk
Add to blender in that order, blend till smooth.
After a big workout, you could add 1-4tbsp of dextrose (corn sugar) too for extra carbs.
Nice, I’ll give this a try. Other than the kale, I have everything needed for this at home.
I was thinking about mixing the Skratch latte with the Hammer chocolate just to about to finish what I have left of the Hammer. I was hoping that the lower dose of caffeine from just half the recommended amount wouldn’t effect me much.
$2-3 per serving for Skratch is crazy. You also are only getting 10g of protein per servicing. 10g of plant protein in bulk costs like 20 cents. The 35g of carbohydrate can be purchased in bulk for like 30 cents.
I make recovery shakes out of vanilla protein powder and then add a banana and frozen blueberries. If I need extra carbs, I add maltodextrin.
I used the vegan Skratch for awhile but it was so expensive. I started making my own mix with sugar, maltodextrin, whey isolate from Sprouts, cocoa powder, and salt. Tastes pretty similar although I admit the Skratch seems to digest a bit faster, but I don’t think it’s super meaningful. For me, I mostly wanted to avoid lactose, so the whey is fine, but bulk pea protein or a vegan blend (pea+rice maybe?) could work fine just the same. I come out way cheaper than Skratch.
Actually I DO have the Skratch recovery powders too. Mixing them is still my thing I guess. I had a powder a while ago that was chocolate, but it was actually ((CHOCOLATE!!!)). The taste was overpowering! Cutting it with something else made it easier to get through it. Now I stick to the two, SIS and Skratch. (Mainly SIS currently because their containers are so large)
SIS has a ‘recovery powder with protein’. It’s actually not bad. I was told not to do lots of protein as a recovery measure, and wait for several hours to do that. Can’t remember why, but the SIS protein recovery powder doesn’t have a lot of protein, but it works. (I can keep it down, and it doesn’t taste so bad mixed with another flavor)
These magical concoctions from these companies are nothing more than basic ingredients with flavor. If you like the taste and convenience and don’t mind the price then great.
I don’t see the point of 10g of protein (in Skratch). It’s a drop in the bucket and you need 20g of leucine to kick off muscle protein synthesis so I’m not seeing the huge benefit of 10g with carbs.
I believe that the need for protein right after working out has been debunked. As long as total daily protein is at an optimal level, the timing doesn’t mater. Many of the old studies involved ingesting a serving of whey protein after working out. Because it increased total daily protein there was a benefit but not from the timing.
Yeah I believe the term used now is “barn door” rather than “window” as far as post-workout nutrient timing.
Some good stuff here about making my own. I have most of the ingredients on hand right now just need to get protein mix. Thanks for the info guys.
Fluid (the brand name) has an amazing tasting vegan chocolate recovery drink, and it’s cheaper than Skratch and Hammer Nutrition. Highly recommend it if you don’t want to mess with making your own!
Here’s my non-vegan recovery mix I used quite a bit in my training days, too, a bit simpler (but not as loaded healthy either):
2c OJ
1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder
1 banana
dash of salt
ice
1-4 tsp of dextrose/corn sugar (depending on length/intensity of the workout to adjust carb ratio).
Very simple, tastes kinda like an orange creamscicle… you could swap out whey for plant protein and it’s back to vegan.
I always kept powders on-hand as well, so don’t think I am against commercial products altogether. I just opted for the homemade stuff most of the time because it’s cheaper, tastes better, and is better for you!
What type of plant protein mix are you using?
I just use Nutricost whey but they also sell (Amazon) rice, pea, and soy protein powder options.
Ok thanks. I found it along with different options.
I see how I can make my own recovery drink at a lower price.
I have a bag of that stuff and agree it’s great.
Didn’t ask me, but I am just using ON’s plant protein. Tastes good and I trust their products after years of using whey before. I have also used Ryse, which is pretty good and has some other stuff (like prebiotics and MCT powder) mixed it, plus the cinnamon flavor is unique… but I can’t justify the cost relative to other plant based powders.
I’ve been using Naked Mass for a while, and it seems to work pretty well.
The ingredients are just organic tapioca maltodextrin, yellow pea protein, and organic brown rice protein.
It’s marketed as a weight gainer (?) but I’m surprised they haven’t changed that term to include recovery…
I’ve found 1/2 a serving (124g carbs & 25g protein) is plenty, which means that 12 lbs has 34 servings for ~$2.10 each.
