Skratch vegan recovery

If you want chocolate, you could just get some cocoa powder and add it to whatever flavor you buy. Might take a couple times to figure out how much to add. I had a vanilla recovery mix sample from somewhere the other day, and vanilla protein dring doesn’t really do it for my, so I added a dash of cocoa powder…much better.

I have a question…what is the technique/trick to blending (I have a nutribullet that I’ve tried) up a shake/smoothie/drink with protein powder, so that it isn’t just a huge cup of foam? Maybe I ran it too long (the reason I tried the blender was to get it good and incorporated) or adding some fruit or ice or something doesn’t let it entrain so much air?

I blend everything but the protein powder first. After the ice and everything is smooth I add the powder. Mix for a few seconds. Keeps that foam at bay.

I checked out the site, Naked Mass looks good. Is this unflavored?

Oh I just saw that they have unflavored and flavored.

So for my mix above, I add the frozen stuff first, then the powders, then the greens, then the liquids. I often have to stop about 20s in and push the greens down into the sludge to get them to blend up well, and then let it run for a minute on “Liquify” once it’s started the whirlpooling.

Since that one tends to come out thicker than some of my older ones, I don’t have foaming issues. In the past, when things were a bit more powder-based for me and I was using ice as the thickener, I’d use a setting on my blender called “Ice Crush” which was essentially just a pulsing action for 1 minute, and then do another 30s on a lower “Mix” setting once everything was already churned up. The pulsing I think helped keep the foaming under control and let the ingredients settle out.

Could just be that you have too much liquid relative to thickeners like ice or frozen fruit in there.

I throw it all in in no particular order. I have a Vitamix so it will pulverize anything in short order.

My only occasional problem typically is too much ice which can blend it to an almost ice cream consistency which will then defeat the Vitamix.

I have 1 banana, 1 pear, some berries, top up to nutribullet fill line with unsweetened soy milk, add a scoop of pea protein powder and blend. Also add cardomen pods or mint if I have any. Apricots and peaches also work well but the banana is the key ingredient to stop the foam

Or if I have flavoured vegan chocolate protein powder i have frozen banana, unsweetened soy milk and a scoop of the flavoured protein.

I tend not to use the flavoured stuff too much as I dont like all the sweetners but its easy to get a chocolate milkshake effect.

Huel Black is my go to post-ride drink and is vegan, I personally like the strawberry but the salted caramel is really good too. It’s 40g protein, 23g carbs, 18g fat for the strawberry shortcake.

I prefer higher protein because I usually consume a lot of carbs in my bottles on the bike but if you need more carbs for your recovery there is a standard Huel that has 30g protein, 46g carbs, 13g fat for the berry.

I too have a Vitamix. That blender has some power and I have made ice cream by accident a few times, I usually will have to add the ice slowly.
