Finally found an analogy worth etching in digital stone today to explain the my thoughts on the subject. Me shaving legs now as a 2.8w/kg rider is similar to the Yankees popping the bubbly to celebrate a wild card win over the A’s yesterday. Now, me shaving my legs once I reach 4w/kg is similar to popping bubbly after a World Series win!..as well as trading in my red/blk Sidi Shots for white ones! :) #2019GoalsWithTrainerRoad
I always, always, ALWAYS shave my legs - year round - or at least trim them down with Philips Norelco. Mostly from my swim (not cycling background), but it just feels cleaner and faster across the board.
Yes, we’ll said!
I started shaving this year after suddenly deciding that hairy legs with bib shorts looks vile. I don’t think I’ll go back now. It is an arse pain keeping my legs hair free but I do feel like a more committed/“serious” cyclist as a result.
My wife does not approve, however. She’s old fashioned and likes her men big, strong and hairy (she’s also not impressed that I’ve lost muscle mass since I took up road cycling). I don’t like her false eyelashes, however, so it’s swings and roundabouts.
Happy wife = happy life!
I stay hairy!!!
If I had a watt for every time my wife said that… I wouldn’t need to shave my legs!
+1
But do not shave my face… go figure.
I did the same 70.3 race this year as two years ago; two years ago I had a beard, and this year I was clean shaven. I was 5 minutes slower on the swim and 2 minutes slower on the bike, without a beard.
Never again.
Ask yourself why, exactly, is it weird to shave your legs? Thinking it’s weird or “only for women” is such a weird social construct.
You don’t have to shave your legs if you want to. Cyclists do it because it’s tradition, looks better, more comfortable to not have skin tight lycra pulling on hair folicles, and is faster.
first time my wife took me to have them waxed , both her and the lady that waxed my legs were in stitches bloody painful😫 Now I just shave using her razor😉 For me think it looks better and she likes it better than hairy legs.
I’m the same. It’s the best bang for your buck option. Shaving takes ages, then you have to do it again in 2 days or my legs go really stubbly
Can you give an example of this? Just a mustache trimmer? Doesn’t it itch or scratch?
I’ve been shaving my legs, off and on, for almost 20 years. The first time I did it was in college and my girlfriend at the time thought that I was out of mind. Then after a few days she said she preferred it and asked me not to grow the hair back ever again. It’s funny, because most of my friends that won’t shave say it’s because their wife/girlfriend quickly vetoed the idea. One guy told me that his wife threatened to stop shaving her legs if he shaved his. He said, “Ok”, but that didn’t go over well either. My wife thinks that all of these women are crazy and that they shouldn’t forbid their husbands or boyfriends from shaving their legs until they try it out in the sack at least once.
With all of that being said, the biggest reason I continue to shave is for wound care. I know that I have had some pretty nasty crashes and it would have been a lot harder to clean the road rash if there was a ton of hair in it. Plus hair holds bacteria, which can slow down wound healing. Trying to shave the hair around a wound is nearly impossible, and you can’t get it all because of the oozing and weeping of the raw skin. I’d like to think that I will never crash again, but I know that’s not realistic. So I shave my legs for the same reason I wear a helmet. Plus it makes applying sunscreen or embrocation much easier. It also makes massages better. My massage therapist says that it makes her job easier.
Hah. I did it for the first time this summer – or rather I used Veet. Besides the smell, and the tingling sensation, I really liked how they looked and felt, plus let me get a much better tan all over this year . I do agree with the massage reason: my foam roller/lacrosse ball really used to pull at the hairs and make it pretty painful.
I was originally using standard set of Wahl hair clippers with no guard, but now I have graduated to using this (again with no guard attached).
Shaven legs here, less so during the winter purely because I’m on the trainer for the most part and also it’s cold here
‘Properly’ with a razor but also ‘Not-so-properly’ with electric trimmers. I prefer the later, it’s quicker and leaves a little 2-3mm or so.
I prefer how it looks and happens to raise less eyebrows, not that I care about that in the slightest.
On a similar topic I haven’t shaved my face with foam and a razor in 6+ years, always opting for trimmers without a guard and a 5’oclock shadow year round.
I shaved my legs for the first time the other week. Can’t believe how well my shorts stay in place on my legs now…
Also, i like how they feel when i’m in bed against my sheets
See that’s what happens, everyone says it’s for areo or road rash reasons, but really it’s cos my legs look muscly and feel nice when shaved!
I knew I couldn’t be the only one…so weird to admit that though
I shave for race season and leave them hairy the rest of the year. That first shave of the year takes a long time, but once they are clean it’s a daily thing and only takes a couple of minutes
Haha! Classic
