I am in a research setting looking to setup a Wingate Anaerobic test (WAnT); WAnT’s are typically done at 7.5% of the individuals body weight. Previously we’ve done these tests on Velotron ergometer, however now we have Wahoo Kickr’s. From what I understand, I cannot set a specific % of BW on the Wahoo’s, so I am struggling to figure out ways in which I can run this test. Would anyone have experience with this?
I haven’t done it, but if I was going to, I would start by looking at the specs of the type of bike the 7.5% rule is defined for - something like this? It looks like power = weight x rpm, so 1kg at 50rpm = 50w, 1kg at 100rpm = 100w etc.
So then you could put your Kickr in resistance mode and run a few tests to see what power you get for various resistance/rpm combinations, e.g. you might find 10% gives 50w at 50rpm. Resistance mode is supposed to be constant torque for a linear power curve, so if 50rpm @ 10% gives 50w, hopefully 100rpm gives 100w, and 50rpm @ 20% gives 100w, etc.
That gives you a factor to convert kg to % resistance (my guess is 1kg = 10% might not be too far off). So if your test calls for 6kg, that will be 60% resistance.
Then you just need to figure out a way to “drop the basket”. If you are controlling the trainer with the wahoo app, I think you can do this by switching between modes. Go to resistance mode and set your 60%, then switch to erg mode and set a low target power so the subject can spin the pedals. Then say 3-2-1-go and switch back to resistance mode to start the test.
