Today, for the second time in as many weeks, I received an adaptation at some point after starting my workout. I did the workout in Zwift, so I’m sure TR didn’t know I was doing it until after I was done, but it still seems odd.
More background: I originally had a 3 hour outdoor ride on the calendar for today but, due to various circumstances, I changed it to a 3 hour TR workout. After the workout was put onto the calendar, and synced with Zwift, the TR app said No Adaptations Required. However, after I completed my workout (in Zwift), I opened the TR app and there were 8 adaptations pending, including one for today!
What’s going on here? Is there a time in the day when adaptations are ‘calculated’, and I need to wait until after that time to make sure nothing is going to change? Does it just take a while after making a change (from the outdoor ride to the indoor workout, in this case) for TR to determine adaptations? Something else?
It was kind of a bummer, because the initial workout given (the one I completed) was easy, and the other possibility (the adaptation proposed after I was done) was a higher PL. just trying to get a better sense of what’s going on with situations like this.
@eddiegrinwald I made all changes in the app (iPad). And, just in case it makes a difference (it probably does), I switched from a Solo Ride to a Group ride on Saturday. Then, on Sunday, I changed from a Group Ride to an Indoor TR workout (which was put at 2.5 hours, instead of the original 3 hours for the outdoor rides). I think I then thought I might go outside, after all, and changed to a Solo Ride (which was still only 2.5 hours), before finally deciding to just ride inside and switching back to in Indoor TR workout, but updating to the original 3 hours.
After each change the system appeared to have rechecked for any potential adaptations (presuming the message at the bottom of the screen was accurate), and each time there were ‘No Adaptations Required’.
In the end I did a 3 hour Endurance 5.5 (Crows Nest). When checking TR shortly after completion, though, it was suggesting that I do an Endurance 6.1 workout of 3 hours (I don’t remember the name, but possibly Chowchilla).
TBH I feel like TR’s adaptations are excessive, or at least implemented in an annoyingly intrusive way. I feel like nearly every single time I open the app I have adaptations, and often seem to have multiple layers (i.e. there are adaptations, I accept them, then that somehow triggers ADDITIONAL adaptations!)
I recently turned on “automatically accept adaptations,” we’ll see how I fare with that. Almost certain adaptations have been triggered since I started writing this post.
@NigelTufnel11 It seems like there were quite a few changes happening in a relatively short period of time.
I wonder if there was a glitch of sorts somewhere along that process where we missed a final adaptation for that workout.
@Teddy_Focaccia It’s worth noting that adaptations aren’t only prompted by completing workouts. There are many reasons for us to change your upcoming workout(s).
If you come across a situation where you feel like the adaptations we’re recommending aren’t justified, please reach out! We’d like to hear about it. Moving forward, let me know how things go with “Automatically Accept Adaptations” enabled.
@eddiegrinwald ok, I had another one today. This time, however, I had not made any changes prior to the workout AND I checked for any potential adaptations just a few minutes before starting today’s workout. Yet this is what I am seeing after my workout:
Something just seems off here, maybe with the time of day at which TR looks for adaptations (which I would think would be every time I see the ‘checking adaptations’ graphic at the bottom of the screen, but might be at a specific time of day)? Or maybe with something else? Whatever it is, it is a bit frustrating.
I’m going to hold off on accepting any more adaptations until I hear something back from you, or until it’s time for Wednesday’s workout.
@eddiegrinwald To add to my previous comments: after associating the workout I did earlier today with the correct TR workout (as that didn’t happen automatically), the ‘checking adaptions’ utility ran and provided 7 different adaptations: 4 for this week, and 3 spread across several upcoming weeks. Notable amongst these were some big increases in the Sweet Spot workouts over the next few Saturdays.
I looked at the TR app several times during the afternoon, and it stayed the same.
I just looked at it again this evening, however, and now there are only 4 proposed adaptations, and they are to change the remaining 4 indoor workouts on my schedule for this week. And, notably, while the Wed, Thu, and Fri proposals are the same as what I saw earlier today, the Sat proposal is now a DOWNGRADE of my Sweet Spot workout (from 6.6 to 6.5), instead of the previously proposed UPGRADE (from 6.6 to, I think 7.0 or 7.2).
Additionally: it seems like the adaptations I am being offered are the same ones over, and over, again. I am tired of James, and Slatna, and Jumba Kang, and Phoenix -3. I know I can look for alternates, but a bit more variety being suggested would be nice.
What is going on here, and why would things change? I haven’t added any other workouts since my TR session earlier today, so I’m baffled as to why the TR AI would ‘change its mind’ since a few hours ago. Can you help me to understand this?
The reason you initially received the adaptations to adapt the workout that was prescribed on the same day is that if your workout in Zwift didn’t automatically associate with your prescribed workout, the software likely thought that what you did in Zwift was simply an additional activity. It then proceeded to adjust your schedule for that day since the original workout was likely no longer appropriate given your ride in Zwift.
I’ll look into why your completed workout didn’t automatically associate with your planned TR workout.
Regarding workout repetition, I do hear you there. There are some tough situations, like with James, where there really isn’t a way to make that workout more productive as a 90-minute endurance ride. It’s basically a continuous 85 minutes at 74% of FTP. The only way to move up from there is to increase the duration of the workout, but your duration cap must be set at 90 minutes.
I’m going to dig a bit further into your adaptations with the team, and I’ll reach out when I have something to share.
Could you give today’s workout a shot as normal in Zwift, and let me know if we auto associate it with your planned TR workout? If it doesn’t, don’t associate it yourself right away. Let me know so that I can take a look first.
Thanks for your help with this one, and sorry for any confusion!
I can confirm this is happening, and not a figment of @NigelTufnel11’s imagination.
This morning, I opened TR, loaded my workout, went back for some reason and they my PL 4.7 threshold workout was replaced with a PL 4.5 threshold workout. (I manually replaced that with a shorter, PL 4.8 threshold workout, so I am not sure whether there is any trace of this left.)
@eddiegrinwald it’s been over 2 hours since I completed today’s workout (in Zwift), and it still hasn’t matched up with today’s workout in TR. And, yet again, there is an ‘adaptation pending’ now for today (which, if your presumption is correct, is because the workout done in Zwift isn’t matching up with the workout in TR).
If you can figure out what’s going on I would appreciate it, as this (the ‘not matching’) has been happening quite a bit lately.
Just chiming in to say that I’m also currently running into the issue of Zwift workouts not matching to my TR workout in the TR app (iPhone in my case). Neither yesterday’s nor this morning’s workouts have synched. Thanks.
@eddiegrinwald great! Please keep me posted. I noted this morning that not only has yesterday’s Zwift workout still not matched with the TR workout, but that the proposed adaptations for the remainder of the week seem much more in line with what I would expect.
I’ll be doing today’s workout in a few hours, so I’ll keep you posted as to whether it matches up, or not.
Also: is it now ok for me to match yesterday’s Zwift workout to the related TR workout? Or should I just leave it unmatched for a while?
It looks like my workout today in Zwift was correctly associated with the related TR workout. The RPE was a bit slow to show up, but eventually did so.
I’ll let you know if there are any further issues. Thanks for the quick fix!
@eddiegrinwald just a quick FYI that yesterday, once again, my completed workout in Zwift did not automatically pair with the related workout in TR. I have already manually matched them, and I don’t have a workout on the schedule for today,so I’ll let you know if I encounter the same issue again tomorrow.
@eddiegrinwald Again today (Tuesday) my TR workout done in Zwift did not match up with the related workout in TR. I’m going to match it up manually, but I’m expecting this to happen again tomorrow, as it has happened on my past two workouts.
If you’ve got any thoughts on how I might correct this issue I would appreciate it. I’m not seeing a bunch of other posts about this situation, so I’m guessing it’s not widespread. However, it does seem to be happening to me regularly for the past week, or so.
