Random 9.4 Anaerobic Workout on TrainNow

Havent been training much and as a result Progression Levels are really low. Think in the 2s. TrainNow just threw a whopping 9.4 Anaerobic Workout at me. I didnt notice it and scheduled it but didnt actually ride that day. I did look at it and think man that is hard but I could swing it. Didnt notice the 9.4 rating until the next day when I went to move the workout I was supposed to do. I havent done an anaerobic workout in months and at Level 1.0

Does TR just throw stuff to test you to get a max effort in a zone?

I didnt do the workout and did something more realistic for my fitness level. Should have I done the 9.4 anyway?

TR have changed their algorithm so it goes on actual ability rather than PL’s which can degrade due to a lot of non structured riding over summer. On the face of it though it looks like a big step. TR threw me back in for my first VO2max workout in ages at a PL 5.1. I’m glad it never wasted the time with the gradual progression from 1 at no more than 0.5 at a time! Maybe AI considers your FTP too low for your ability

I think FTP can be a bit irrelevant when considering Anaerobic efforts. AI may have seen that you have a high anaerobic capacity and may well be able to complete the high PL workout.

Points taken. Yeah my Vo2 workouts seem relatively easier than Threshold stuff. I DO SUCK FTP WISE. Just not very aerobic in nature, I guess. Would be cool if there was a prompt saying Hey, after analyzing your workouts, it would be helpful to test this zone by giving you a Stretch Workout.

I would totally be on board chasing FTP gains by raising the roof so to speak.

Yesterday, it gave me a 6.2 Vo2 Workout and I successfully completed it. Prior PL was 2.2. I guess Ill just do what it asks. If I fail or respond with survey too hard, it will back it down.

It seems like y’all are on the right path. Give that workout a go @tx246! I’ve got a feeling you might surprise yourself. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Well eddie, you are right about me being on the right path. That same workout came up and I went and did it. Surprised though. In the last 5 days, TN has scheduled the following. Vo2 6.2, day off, Threshold 5.3, rest day, Anaerobic 9.8, Red Day. Keep in mind all my levels were in the 2 range….

Thats a bunch of intensity for a 60 yr old but lets see what happens.

Take one day at a time and don’t be afraid to skip a workout if you’re certain you’re not ready for it.

If that ends up being the case, you can easily change your plan to only have two hard workouts a week.

If it’s the Workout Levels that are intimidating, try to avoid focusing on them. You’ve just learned that a high-ish number doesn’t always mean that you’re going to struggle. We have thousands of workouts in our library, and we’re picking specific ones for you, so do your best to give them a fair shot as you did with this last one.

Let me know how things go!
