Pausing a Workout outside

Weather is finally breaking and im taking TR outside more often, issue im having is being in an interval and coming to a stop sign or not wanting to start a hard duration during an interval knowing traffic is going to make me stop it. I pause the route but then I loose all the distance from the pause to when I can restart. Is there a way to pause the interval but keep the data recording so it doesn’t look like I quit mid interval ?? I hope im explaining that right, words are hard. Thank you kindly.

@SeanHurley provided some additional insights into how outside workouts are evaluated in another thread some time ago. It may not answer all your questions but might prove a good starting point.

Tl;dr: don’t stress about it too much. Just ride normally and let the workout/route continue.

Hey @twilocki

Good info from @martenk already! I would try and find a place where you can get to and do your intervals and know you won’t have to come to a stop sign.

Even if you keep the head unit recording, the data still shows you paused. If that makes sense?

If you have to stop and then resume, then it won’t be the end of the world, but it’s better to find a place (like a hill) to complete the intervals.

You can always choose a Workout Alternate that you think better suits your outside terrain, stop signs, etc…

If you have a Wahoo, when you pause the workout it does NOT pause the data recording, just the advancement through the interval. You can also skip back to the start of an interval or skip ahead to the next one. This is ideal because then you can adapt on the fly however you need to. I’m not sure how Garmin devices do it but there’s sure to be some articles / videos about it.

Regardless of head unit, the workout file from TR to your head unit is just the prescribed work. The recorded activity file shows what you did and only that (the prescribed intervals aren’t recorded in the activity file). Depending on head unit and settings, your head unit might not record data during the paused time, but it will record how long you were paused, so TR can see your true power vs clock time either way.

Personally I set my head units not to pause at all. I want to see what actually happened and pauses cause confusion when analyzing data.
