Does anyone have any real world experience with the new Maurten product Gel Mix 480?
Thicker than Drink Mix and looser than Gel, it contains 120 grams of carbohydrates per serving when dissolved in 200 ml of water.
I do have experience with the normal Gels, but don like the Gel-packaging. I am planning nutrition for a 8 hour race and would love to be able to have all my energy in camelback and bottles. Was thinking of doing 3 doses of the gel mix in a 620 ml Camelbak podium bottle.
Does the Gel mix flow enough to be drank from a podium bottle?
How difficult is it to mix, i.e will i be able to “remix” 3 doses with water at an aid statition during the the race?
I do not have experience with the 480 . I do know the 320 does not mix well at aid stations with ice cold water. Seems to settle at the bottom of my bottles. Works fine with water at normal room temp.
Haven’t tried it yet, but assuming it is differently packaged Drink Mix 320, then it should work. For comparison, for long days i have managed to dissolve 6 packages into 950mL bottle with warm water (day before, overnight in fridge to cool it down). Thick, but drinkable; or more precisely, suckable
By weight, 4x Gel Mix 480 (500g) ~ 6x Drink Mix 320 (480g)
Hey @stefanf - I was a tester of this product for Maurten while racing cape epic this year. It is a good product for sure, but might be incorrect for your use case. It works best in a soft flask, and you want a high-flow bite valve to get it. It is thicker than 320 by quite a bit I would say, and in my experience got thicker as the day went on. I did not test mixxing it on the fly at an aid station, but I have doubts it would work well and it requires a good shake to get it fully mixed. I’d also say the packaging is LARGE, almost comically. I would not have space to carry multiple bags of it on a ride.
Skratch recently launched a test run of a gel that comes in a wine-bag that is awesome as well. That would flow much better out of your podium bottle, but still wouldn’t solve your remix issue.
I finally got a chance to test this gel out on a outdoor ride today.
I like it probably the best of all gels I have tried (and I have tried them all). Its is a really good product.
It has 480kcal. It can replace about 5 other gels.
Fits in you pocket well. The flask is extremely well made.
Its really easy to drink on the bike, really no different than drinking from a bottle. The mix comes out so well you actually have to make sure you don’t take too much at once. Its way easier to slam some then other gels, even the maurten gel.
Easy on stomach, and is a really good option on hot days when you want more water in your bottles than carbs.
Its about half the price of normal Maurten gels.
Premix in the evening and its all ready in the morning. I wouldn’t mix it during a ride.
Overall, I will be switching to this gel for all my longer outdoor rides and races. I will stick with normal packet gels for shorter rides.
