Don’t know if they’re available in the US, but fig rolls (Fig roll - Wikipedia) tend to be my staple to put in a bag an into the back pocket.

I’m pretty sure the answer is zero. The Skratch labs cook book uses stuff from the grocery store. The skratch labs products they sell are premade stuff so you do t have to prepare yourself.

I gave these a try, and besides falling apart as you noted, they were waaaaay to dry for me. It felt like they sucked all the moisture out of my mouth

I’m like you and prefer to eat my calories, and also have texture issues with chews and gels. I have found that I really like dates (my Trader Joe’s medjool dates are 10g CHO/date) and maple sugar candies (also 10g/piece). The maple sugar is a little pricey, but it’s oooohhhh so good during the latter part of a ride. I know that there was a discussion on one of the TR podcasts about using dates for fuel and they couldn’t understand how it could work, but honestly, I’ve never had a problem with the fiber in them.

if you don’t like Rice Crispy treats maybe this won’t work for you… I went from the Nature Bakery bars to Clif Blueberry Crisp and they have been $0.99 each at The Feed for most of they year. To qualify for free shipping I order in multiples of 10 and get a bunch of full boxes. Then, the next order I’ve got store credit from the previous order. Each soft bar is 250 calories and 43g carbs, much easier to eat on the bike versus the Costco Clif bar package (two flavors: chocolate chip and something). The Costco ones are harder to chew.

Oh, and Costco has Stroopwafels in the store. 3 waffles is 420 calories and 63g carbs, and costs about $1 for the 3 if I did my in-store math correctly. Or more direct comparison to The Feed Clif bars, 2 waffles is 280 calories and 42g carbs. Same same but waffles a little cheaper if my math is correct.

When I’m not in the mood for homemade gels and sugary drinks and the type of ride allows it, I usually entirely skip industrial food and my go to fuel is a good small sized bread bought in a bakery with a tasty prosciutto cotto. The kind of food you stop riding to enjoy.
If you don’t hate having your pocket overly food, you can bring 4 of those.
Sometimes I prepare a banana bread and take it with me.
Once I had some polenta leftover from the dinner. Grilled it and brought on the ride.

I saw the Stroopwafels last time I was at Costco. I’m just concerned they will end up a big mess / lots of pieces after being shoved in a jersey pocket. Though I might try them for the trainer.

I switched from the Cliff bars to the Nature’s Bakery, as the Nature’s Bakery end up being ~$0.45/bar compared to about double that (or more) for the Cliff Bars.

Spam musubi

Or sans spam and just cook rice with sugar and wrap in seaweed

I’ve been meaning to make some sweet red bean musubi for endurance fuel.

This is where the Skratch-style rice cakes come in, though. With the mix-ins and paper foil, you can choose all sorts of fillings and not worry about layers and soggy nori-maki.

I like using my musubi maker, though.

Salted boiled potatoes.

Supermarket fruit cake, with a bit of butter.

Wrap in foil.

amazon has good acryllic double musubi molds

is that seriously 2000+ calories for $4???

I like my stainless steel ones. Pricey but unbreakable.

EF Pro Cycling rice cakes. I add 1-2 additional tablespoons of sugar, but I have a bit of a sweet tooth. These actually keep fairly well in the freezer, too. I have a stack ready to go for longer endurance rides where I want to fuel but not use mix, gels, bars, etc.

And +1 for StroopWafles.

See if you can find Costco Hartybake Maple Belgian Waffles. I love them.

Edit: just saw these referenced above. Sorry for double post.

Can say this: they do not crumble on me; however, I do need to consume with a swig of water or mix. A bit dry, but mild flavor (easy on the stomach).

Two bananas before the ride is about 40-50g carbs. If I eat on the bike for a 2 hour mid-week ride before dinner, its 1 Clif bar. Probably go thru 4 a week and the bananas are dirt cheap, so maybe a total of $5/week. FWIW I like fig bars, and used them for awhile, but prefer the taste/texture of the Blueberry Crisp Clif bars (thats the only Clif bar I’ll buy). Just pulled up Costco and the Stroopwafels were $11 for 40. About $0.28 per waffle which provide 21g carbs and 140 calories. Nice change of pace. For longer rides I’ll pack some Maple Syrup in a flask. Medjool dates get mixed in every now and then.

Impressive huh

There’s also a dark version, which may be even more calories. I haven’t had either for years but I think I’ll buy one today and try it for breakfast before some early rides I’ve got coming up.
