LIVE Group Ramp Test - Monday, April 13th at 1PM Pacific

No talk at all in last couple minutes. And that look for a few minutes cuts through all our BS and reminds us what we all have in common. I seemed to see that in comments too, which went from wise-assery early on to heartfelt well-wishing at the end, bets aside.

The sound is another matter. I didn’t have my headphones on because my wife was outside. She came in about minute 17 and for a second thought I was watching porn on my iPad.

That’s not what it looks like, I swear!

Don’t fall for the old ‘oh my bluetooth is paired to my phone!’ trick.

@Nate_Pearson is crafty.

Well I really must congratulate the team at TrainerRoad for generating a great product and ENOUGH INTEREST to get thousands of people to tune into a live stream of a ramp test.

That was astounding.

Great timing, I had my FTP ramp test just now, and watching you guys and gals suffer put me in the right mood :stuck_out_tongue:

I think I am getting more and more why group workouts are appealing. Just one feature request: please, please offer 1-month trials. I’d really like to get some of my team mates on board with TrainerRoad, but they are all married to Zwift.

They do. Either you can send the code if you have them or they offer 30 days money back.

I know about referral codes, I have three left. But a free one-month trial has much less friction than having to juggle with referral codes. Plus, referral codes means you have to deal with English web pages, which is a substantial barrier in Japan.

Just watched the YouTube video. Brilliant, congratulations to you all :+1:

What did surprise me is the fact that people started dropping around the 19.30 mark. I’m not at elevation so I guess I have no idea how it might impact things?

Well done to all of you for putting yourself through that for our enjoyment

I would assume a lot of people are doing a Ramp Test somewhere in the world at the same time. Could Trainerroad schedule shared Ramp Test session every 15 minutes that we could just jump into if we want to share the pain. That way we wouldn’t need to organise it like we do with other workouts.

The testing time was completely normal. Unless your FTP has changed really significantly, that’s how long ramp tests last in my experience. As far as I can tell, with the exception of Chad, their results were all within a few W of what they had said their FTP was on the last podcast. Nate and Pete got a small bump, Amber “lost” 3 or 4 W. So the testing time was completely normal.

By the way, I noticed that compared to the live stream, they added some non-descript music (I guess royalty-free from Youtube’s catalog). It’s a bit calm for a ramp test. Alternatively, they could have gone for comedic effect and chosen elevator music.

Really enjoyed the build up to and the actual video.

Seeing how the TR crew handle the test and how deep they go has made me realise the importance of giving it everything as everyone is suffering. Cant wait to give this a go.

Side note is Coach Chad ok? He looked extremely uncomfortable during the whole thing or it could just be me.

Anyway good job team.

Just an observation. I can usually make it to 20 minutes and a handful of seconds. A couple of times I’ve broken into 21 minutes. That’s where the ‘funny’ comments from the TR Crew start.

I did think that three (shall remain unnamed) of the TR Crew would hit that sort of duration, easily.

It’s all a function of your previous FTP setting though isn’t it?

You could change it to 50 and last an extra 10 minutes if you really wanted.

Yup, same here.
My ramp test today including warm-up lasted 16 seconds shy of 20 minutes and my measured FTP was identical to my previous FTP (I had upped it twice since my last ramp test as I was getting fitter). Chad lasted until roughly 19:30, and Nate and Pete lasted another minute-and-a-half.

So it seems it’ll last about 20 minutes if your FTP hasn’t budged, a little less if you lost a few watts and a minute-or-so longer if you have made fitness gains.

all-in-all, their ramp tests were

19:30 is when you match your previous ftp. I guess they all know their ftp quite well, so there weren’t any real surprises.

Yeah, he did not say two words.

That’s correct. If you have a severely underestimated FTP, or it has been a long time since you’ve tested and you’ve seen a lot of improvement, then you would theoretically see a statistically significant extension of how long you could last during the ramp. However, given this would mean that physiological stimuli of previous workouts would be blunted by not hitting a high enough effort level, this effect would phase out rapidly since your body would have ceased to adapt to the training load at a certain point.

Thus, IMO lasting between 20 and 21 minutes is ideal for the ramp test because 1) you have made physiological progress (i.e. the amount of stimuli to your body was sufficient to create adaptation, and 2) your prior workouts were sufficiently high efforts to create said adaptations over the given period/block (meaning your FTP/zones were not underestimated, or overestimated). But I’m just spitballing on this one.

Thank you to the whole crew from me as well! Very cool to see you guys doing it, and realizing we are all more or less the same .
Just curious: Is @Brandon the person you see on the start splash-screen of the iOS-App?

Thanks again and keep up the good work!
