…but I’ve been spreading the word through the running world I now inhabit.
They’re all about a decade behind what we’ve been discussing thanks to the TR podcasts. All those gazillion hours of information have given me an encyclopedic knowledge on training and nutrition. I’ve enjoyed passing it on to those runners who care to listen.
Thankfully the days of running a marathon on a sip of water seem to be ending, but in training. Jeez! You’d think a calorie was the enemy.
Don’t diet on the bike! Fuel the work! I sing out as we lap the track. We’re making progress and loving the journey.
Do miss cycling though. Am planning a few days on the mtb soon. Still love the thought of a bit of wilderness riding.
How do these athletes who refuse to fuel in training go with bombing their guts with carbs in a race situation? I think mine would explode if I wasn’t used to it.
Heh, if they’re clinging to this eating-is-cheating mentality, I’d just hush my mouth, watch them watching me getting faster because the training’s higher quality.
Also I think it’s no coincidence that team sports seem to be capped at 1½h which is about the same duration that I anecdotally hear of cyclists runing out of steam on unfuelled intense rides.
I managed to get a few people fuelling by bringing jelly sweets along on our long runs. When they realised that the world didn’t drop out of them after having a couple, I pointed out they’d essentially just eaten a gels worth of sugar. Gels make quite a regular appearance on our group runs now. We’re getting there.
Welcome back, we spoke quite a lot back in 2022 in the run up to your aborted Alps Epic and I was off to do Transalp. Glad to hear you have managed to get over the long COVID that floored you.
I have been out with a bad knee for a year and am just coming back as well!
I got into ultramarathons and ran three 50mile races last year. It was awesome.
This year I’m focusing on getting fast and doing short road races and track. Have got my 5k time down to 16.52 and I’m still improving.
Poor bikes have barely had a look in. I did do a trip to the Alps last autumn though and we rode a few of the Alps Epic stages. They were extremely tough. I don’t think I’d have enjoyed the event that much after the first day.
