This week I did an unplanned outside unstructured ride, just riding around with my pals. Just as a test, I then added a TR workout to my calendar, āStanfordā a Threshold 5.0 WL, leaving it as the default āInsideā, and associated my outside ride with this workout.
By doing that, I get credited with PL bumps (primary: Threshold, secondary: Sweetspot) from Stanfordās workout levels.
If I then remove the association by marking my outside ride as āUnplannedā, my PLs revert to what they were previously.
NB this was just a test to see how it worked. Associating a random workout with an outside ride in which the work you performed bore no resemblance to the workout associated with it is clearly not a sensible thing to normally be doing, as it could just lead to your PLs being hopeful/guesswork/nonsense with possibly little relation to reality. ie. No point in abusing this temporary functionality that TR has introduced (introduced as a stop-gap workaround until automated, accurate outside ride analysis is eventually implemented). For now, it makes sense to only use this association functionality as a means of gaining PL credit in situations where the outside ride you rode closely matches the workout structure youāre associating it with, else weāll just be cheating ourselves.
The latest AT seems to have picked up everything I done last night (at least it let me assign surveys to the separate activities); the warm up on rollers, the ride to the start, the actual TT and cooldown. Its not assigned PLās that are visible to me but talking to the TR staff about previous stuff it should be accounted for in the background AT algorithm.
I know youāve had a chat with support, but still, I donāt think the above is correctā¦
Adaptions (of future scheduled workouts) are driven off of your PL levels, hence if your PLs arenāt reflecting your outside rides (eg. because at present theyāve not been associated with a workout that in turn trigger changes to your PLs) then that outside ride cannot itself drive any adaptions of your scheduled workouts.
What they may have been referring to is the TrainNow functionality which will note that youāve just done a harder ride (regardless of whether you associated that ride with a w/o) and use that knowledge when āRecommendingā your next TrainNow workout, ie. suggesting Endurance instead of the other two.
Having asked me for a survey and then did adaption calculations after I think it might be but I cant say 100%. Support did say it was a brand new feature but its a constantly changing feast
It makes sense that PL should go down if your FTP goes up. There has been a lot of discussions around how much they should go down though.
It certainly seems like there COULD be a reclassification of the previous 1-2 weeks worth of workouts based on your new FTP. For instance, if I was doing 3x20 SS (say at 200w) workouts this week with my old FTP, but with my new FTP, 200w iss really more like Tempo, the backend could adjust my tempo PL to match a comparable 3x20 tempo workout from the library.
However, we know that the backend software isnāt smart enough to classify what work you actually did (otherwise outdoor rides would work w/o being associated with a workout), only what the WL prescribed to that particular workout.
The original post has been updated with a lot of materials to answer any questions you may have, so check on that periodically for updates. That said, Iād recommend starting with this blog article.
But why are we hung up on Progression levels. My outside ride are long rides that would fall into endurance/tempo. I donāt do those type of rides inside in the summer. I really only want to know that the amount I ride outside is impacting the intensity of the rides I do inside. I gave up on AT some time ago as I would prefer to wait until it is out of beta.
My real nitpicking item on AT is the starting levels tend to be too low. TIme to ramp up to me takes too long. And the decay levels were driving me crazy. Yes I know it has since been adjusted. I just found it wasnāt helping being in the beta.
I like the individual PLs of the workouts and that is what I use when I select what workout I do. It will get there but I prefer to see a more polished product even though I know I still have lots of playing to do. I am one of those doing 4 rides a week.
aināt nobody got time for the wrong workout LOL, and also why there is so much ānot in the TR beta yetā anxiety. And by extension its like being told your previous plans were serving up the wrong workouts, so please fix it for me already!
If I perform a scheduled TR outside workout using my garmin headset will my levels automatically be updated.
I have performerd alot of tr outsided workouts and sweetspot and threshold workouts have worked well i.e. levels updated.
But OE workouts executed well, have usually resulted in the struggle survey being issued and therefore no level updates.
Will the OE āfailedā workouts now automatically update progression levels without me doing anything else?
Youāll now receive a pass survey and have the option to indicate you struggled instead. No more āfailā survey for outdoor workouts unless you indicate you struggled. Once you answer the survey, credit to PLs will occur and adaptations may also occur as a result. This is not retroactive, however, so it wonāt account for your previous outdoor workouts.
Iām on Wahoo Bolt and did an outdoor workout today (Ericsson +2). Iāve answered the response survey. Iām not seeing any progression descriptions like I do when I do an indoor workout. Will it happen later? Should I be contacting support about this?
Follow up: Support is aware of this issue and is currently working on it.
A couple other users noted this up the thread as well. Iām seeing it too, but the changes to my progression levels still appear to be going through, which suggests to me this is an aesthetic issue rather than AT not giving credit for the workout. No harm in reporting it as well. The extra information may help in the long run.
