Say my 28-day AI FTP update is available today, but I’ve got some hard workouts lined up for next week and I want to do them at my current FTP. So I decline the update for now, do the hard workouts and then take the update a week later instead.
In this case, will the updated FTP now factor in those hard workouts that I have just done (i.e. it will be looking at the last 35 days instead of 28) or will it just be the same value that was available a week ago?
What seems to happen if I accept the new FTP (and it’s higher) is that all my PLs dial back a bit and AT changes the session that was planned to a lower PL one. Sometimes I prefer the longer intervals at a lower FTP. Sometimes I just want to see if I can even complete it!
If you’re on a plan and letting the AI adapt your workouts, updating your FTP might alter the power level of the intervals, but it shouldn’t really impact the overall workout difficulty.
@moonman I would say maybe re-jigger your AI-FTP gestalt. Whether you allow TR AI to predict your FTP today or next week, your real FTP is not materially different. It’s just that TR AI FTP may have a different prediction.
If it were me, I would want to give TR AI FTP prediction as much data as possible so that TR has a better chance to predict my actual FTP. Because I think training adjustments will be more productive the closer TR predicted FTP is to my actual, real-deal FTP. So I always wait. I don’t want over-prediction, I don’t want under-prediction, I want the most accurate prediction.
To complete this questions / answers, I have an AI FTP update planned just before a 2 week Xmas break, where I will not ride but I will X country ski around 30km/day for one of the weeks. Is it recommended to update the FTP:
Before the Xcountry ski week
Just after the X Country ski week, before restarting TR
After a few TR trainings after the Xcountry ski week
I was going to go for option 3 as well, but yesterday I did a very hard VO2 Max training (Hurd - which I propose to rename hurt ). Just after TR proposed to update my FTP… I could not resist to see if my efforts were worth it and so I finally went for the 1st option: +2.6% as last month. But I’m still wondering what it would have been with option 2 or 3
I always recommend updating your FTP when you have the chance. It’s been a full month since it’s been updated, and that’s reason enough for me.
I think kicking the can down the road in this situation can lead you to a slippery slope. There will always be shiny workouts on the horizon that might make your FTP higher, and in theory, your FTP should increase over time, so when is the best time to take the blindfold off and look at the numbers?
It’s possible that your FTP might be a watt or two higher (I can’t say for sure) but you’re also delaying resetting your PLs and building them back up. If you’ve got a tough week of training ahead, why not use that to build your PLs back up?
Some people like to push things out and try the really high-level workouts, but unless you’re in a Specialty phase or nearing a big event, you’re likely better off keeping your FTP up to date and sticking with the sustainable, bread & butter workouts.
I was laying in bed at 4:45 this morning debating if I wanted to detect my AI FTP that was available overnight, or wait until after my V02 workout that would move up my progression levels.
My recovery hasn’t been the greatest the last month, but have made it through my workouts. Wouldn’t have been surprised if my FTP went down. Decided to pull the trigger and checked it before my workout, went up +2, and at an all time high, so pretty content with my “offseason” wrapping up. As a newer rider (under 2 years) makes sense that I’m not losing much and still progressing slightly with less volume and intensity, but consistency.
