Generate a training plan from a race course gpx file

Is it possible for TR to create a training plan from a race course profile?

As far as I know, not really, but this article may be helpful: https://support.trainerroad.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002688103-Importing-a-workout-from-BestBikeSplit

We don’t analyze race course profiles at the moment. Instead, you just need to enter in some basic event details such as the discipline (Rolling Road Race, Cyclocross, Criterium, etc.), duration, and effort level.

We’ll get the right plan in place with that information. The extreme detail of the course profile is sort of overkill.

Also, keep in mind that a course can be ridden a few different ways. Are you riding with a goal time in mind, or are you going to be competing head-to-head with other riders, while attacking and covering others’ moves?

Selecting the discipline that best suits the course as well as your intentions is the most important part here.

Let me know if you’d like some help figuring out what to pick! :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m not sure whether to pick a climbing race or rolling road race. The course is 100km and 3k feet of climbing. I’d like to improve the most on the climbs.

Definitely rolling. That amount of climbing of fairly minimal for that distance, not flat, but not hilly either.

I’d say that it depends on the length of the climbs.

From that illustration, it looks like the majority of the elevation gain is in the form of one really long climb, and three shorter ones.

How long do you anticipate they’ll take?

Rolling Road Race is good for climbs probably up to around 5 minutes, whereas Climbing Road Race is good for climbs up and over 30 minutes.

first one around 30 min
second one about 15min

I’d probably go with Climbing Road Race if you plan to tactically race others, or Gran Fondo if you plan to push yourself and finish in the best time you can on your own. :+1:

Ok, so gran fondo will cover climbing too? i want to finish in the best time but i’ll make up the most times on the climbs.

Yes. Gran Fondo is by no means for flat courses. It builds solid muscular endurance for longer days in the saddle, be it on flat ground or on long climbs.

The Road Race plans are more focused on sharper attacks that you might make or have to follow when competitively racing others during hard parts of the course.
