Garmin map updates

Hey. Hope nobody minds a Garmin rather than TR question, but I was hoping the hivemind would have a solution…

My new Garmin 850 is painfully slowly updating its maps over WiFi and that prompted me to try it with Garmin Express on my PC and my 1030 Plus over USB (old Garmin cable). It didn’t work well with USB-C and the 850, so I don’t know what I was thinking.

Anyway - having now deleted the old maps - I’m stuck on a loop of Express inching forward the update on the 1030 by about 1% before it says “Some changes not applied”, after which I have to exit, retry, and it inches forward another 1%. I can’t do this all the way to 100%… what am i doing wrong?

Express is being run as administrator, and the connection between PC/device isn’t breaking, and there is plenty of hard drive space on each side.

A quick search turns up a few other people with this problem (I looked because I have a couple of Garmin Edges… that I will now never delete the maps from!).

There doesn(t seem to be any way to manually copy the Garmin files, but if you get desperate you could use OpenStreetMap instead : How to: Install Free Maps on your Garmin Edge | DC Rainmaker

I recommend calling Garmin (call, don’t email or chat)

They will get you through to a real human who knows the product and can probably walk you through this. I’ve had tremendous success calling them up.
