Got back from vaca, plugged the Edge in to my Mac, and get that comforting message. I’ve run through the basic steps for troubleshooting this issue, and nothing seems to work. It’s a MacBook Pro (M4) with the latest Sequoia 15.5 os version. I’ve deleted Express twice, rebooted several times, gone through the Privacy settings, pffft… Same message.
It’s showing the disk mode icon on the Edge screen, but the Mac is not showing it as a storage device. I’ve tried the shortcut to force it to disk mode, but there were no changes.
Wondering if Sequoia 15.5 has a security snit going with the Edge, or if the Edge got corrupted in transit. It worked fine there though, and got my rides off of it while there.
Just for reference. My Garmin840 no longer connects to my Mac. A Garmin update last year corrupted my 840. There is no fix for mine. It only works with my iPhone now.
Nice… They wouldn’t, of course, swap it for free? It’s odd that it DOES connect to my iMac, but not my MacBook Pro. Again: Nice… It’ll be worth making it work, but the time I’ll have to spend between Garmin and Apple won’t be credited back to my lifespan.
Tangent: The longest time I was on hold for tech support was over 6.5 hours! (I was working at a computer store and calling for a customer repair issue) Then it took about three minutes for the call: ‘Nope, we don’t have that part available.’ Seriously? What am I supposed to do without it? ‘Well, not sure, but we don’t considered it a ‘necessary part’’.
The switch to MTP (from mass storage) with a recent firmware update means Edge x40 (and 1050) won’t show up as a normal volume/drive letter on macOS. You’ll need to use something like Android File Transfer (while Express isn’t loaded) to access files on them.
No way Jose, no freebies. Mine won’t connect to new Mac or older Macs. As an addded bonus it keeps thinking I have set new distance records all the time. There is a 112 mile ride still on the device and the distances are less than that.
Did they have a reason, what happened, what caused it? Is it common? Kind of makes me nervous to hear about devices that I use, rely on, tripping out like that.
I have tried this. The main issue is: the device is somehow corrupted; maybe at the boot loader level or…… Just plugging it into the Mac causes the device to freeze and drain the battery.
Just guesses and all the “let’s try this” did not fix the underlying issue. I don’t think it’s common. It does work thru my phone without issues. Can push TR workouts to the Garmin. Charges ok and battery life is great. Navigation is great as is Varia and other sensors. If I had a PC I would try to mess with it and Garmin Connect some more. Being a beta tester for Apple I never learned my lesson to wait on updates.
I would not worry. My 530 and 520 still work just fine.
My rant is done😏
The 1040 connects with my iMac fine. I can push updates, and sync rides. It just works. Plug it into my MacBook Pro, and I get that error. One time I got an error that I should use the Map Updater App, and not Express. Garmin support had no idea why it did that too.
It’s a Mac16,5. It has 3 USB-C/Thunderbolt ports. Nothing really special, but it works for everything else. I’ve had a Samsung Shield SSD drive connected to each port with no problems. I tried the 1040 on each port, and nope, nada… Depressing to have a new MBP, and it won’t support the 1040. I can’t think why it won’t work, and Garmin is stumped too. They wanted to swap it out, but I can’t believe that is the answer, and don’t want a refurbed unit because it too may not work.
High tech is great, when it works. When it doesn’t, it all hits the fan. I’ve tried everything short of a full wipe, so like @TrekCentury I’ll deal with it. (I wonder if a 1050 would work better. Doubt they would want to give me a new OOB one to test. Yeah, nope)
In the end, it’s just a MacBook Pro. Telling a 1040, that it wants to talk.
WOW!! So yakked it up with Apple Support today, and got the idea that they would talk to Garmin to try to identify the problem, but no. Dumped onto a Garmin agent to explain where the Apple agent got things wrong, and walked through everything that I have tried. (Garmin said I was not using THEIR cable, and that was the problem. Obviously level 1 support) But they agreed that there was nothing wrong with anything, but it’s still not working. ‘Has to be the Apple hardware’. But earlier the Apple agent said that I could try reinstalling macOS. So after the Garmin encounter, I figured what do I have to lose. I backed up the MBP, and reinstalled, and the wiped and reinstalled macOS. The 1040 still refused to connect. So I called Apple and opened another case. The went through more testing and tried to tell me that it was all on me, yeah, my 4K notebook that won’t run a simple app is all on me, and I’m stuck with it?
I suggested to go to an Apple Store and use the same model notebook there to install Garmin Express and see if it fails too. (Oh, he thought I was going to buy another one. (Sure, why not. Does he want one too?))
So the story isn’t over. I have to go to the Apple Store and see what happens. Hopefully I don’t get there and they have no clue why I’m there.
Again, does anyone have the M4 Max MacBook Pro that has Garmin Express running and connecting to their Edge 1040, or any device? Wasted a sunny day on this today. TGIF!!
A stretch: Wondering if there is a programming error in the source code of the Express app at this point, unless it works on a different one. It’s not impossible that the Express app has an issue, but at this point it’s the only other option from trying a different similar MacBook Pro. Tried cables, tried reinstalling, tried refreshing the OS, tried wiping the MacBook Pro. It works fine on the older MacBook Pro I have, and iMac too.
Me. Express runs but won’t connect to any devices. It’s a M3. It will push workouts to my 840 but only thru my phone. Express does work on my older laptop. I think it’s a 2018 model . But only with my 530.
Edit: the more I think about your issue it seems to me it’s a driver issue in Garmin’s app that’s not properly identifying the device. I don’t know how it id’s devices. Maybe by MAC address. It’s beyond my brain power.
I sent a message to Garmin wondering if there is a problem with Express and Apple Silicone chips. Some told me that they had it running on M2 systems with no problems. Some say they had to setup a Windows virtual machine to get their M-based macs to use Express (didn’t know that was possible). Hard to believe that they would have that problem, if it is with the M-series. They didn’t come out yesterday after all. There might be timing issues, or some other programming mess going on. Shoddy programming is more common than some people think, sadly.
I’ve got an M2 mac mini, so I’ll see if it works on that. Like I don’t have enough to do already then chase bugs in software.
Garmin Express looks like it’s NOT compatible with Apple Silicone chips. No ‘M’ chips I have will run Express.
Nice…
And Apple’s chips have been out for how many years now? And No Support, and their support agents don’t have a clue? What is up with that?!?! They should be saying “No, Express doesn’t support Apple M Chips yet, and may never.”
