Garmin Edge 840 & 540 Released

How did you get the amber side bars for you Varia warnings? My 840 only ever shows red.

Previously I had a 520+, but I upgraded to the 840 a week ago after my 520 silicone buttons disintegrated. I’m really pleased and impressed with the 840, but previously on my 520 the Varia warnings would usually show amber, but occasionally red whenever there was a car approaching quickly. That amber+red differentiation was a nice feature was on the 520, but I haven’t found a way to get it back on the 840. I only ever get red warnings now on the 840.

I’m not upgrading from the 1030 if thats the case, I like Red-Orange. It gives me the feeling they’ve saw me and slowed down. In my 1030’s ‘Radar Alert Settings’ the ‘Colour Overlay’ is set to ‘On’; perhaps thats the control. There is a chance that all the passes youve had of late too have been fast (red) and never orange!

I get green-red-orange on my 1040 so I can only assume the 5 & 8 do as well. I am looking at my Varia settings under sensors but there is nothing specific other than Color Overlay set to ON

I didn’t do anything, that’s the way it’s suppose to work. If not it’s a bug in a particular firmware version. Call Garmin and report it.

I have an 840 and I get the full range of colors. If your software is up to date, it’s time to contact Garmin.

Okay, thanks everyone. I’ll do that and contact Garmin’s customer support.

I did a quick search on the Garmin 840 forum and didn’t see anyone else reporting an issue.

My 840 updated to 18.23 yesterday.

Was surprised to see this last night on the road, secondary target now working (at least cadence is) when exporting from TrainingPeaks to Garmin:

on my 840:

as a reminder, another screenshot from last night when a secondary target was NOT specified:

Good riddance to step distance, at least when a secondary target is specified!

Not sure if this is the best thread for it, but does anyone have suggestions for heart rate zone color data fields? I just want a field that has a big zone number and displays in a different color for different zones. Like:

  • blue for zone 1
  • green for zone 2
  • yellow for zone 3
  • orange for zone 4
  • and red for zone 5.

Also, any suggestions for a similar power zone data field?

Thanks in advance!

This is what I came up with after reviewing various sources.

This is mostly centered on power, but the HR is parallel to it enough for my needs that I think the colors make sense there too.

Thanks! The color scheme is great!

I think I should have been more specific - What I’m really looking for is a data field from the Connect IQ store that I can install on my 840 so that it displays my HR zone in color, and another data field that displays my power zone in a color.

Got it, thought you wanted color to zone ideas.
Sadly, I have no experience on the Garmin side to help.

Is this specific color coded matrix a web app or spreadsheet that you could share? I know there are calculators out there for Coggan’s power zones but I like this a lot.

It’s part of the Google sheet I have shared for ages:

You can follow the instructions on the 1st or 3rd sheet to make your own copy, that then allows you to update with your own data.

Almost one year after the launch, how many people have experienced issues with the quarter turn mount tabs on the rear? There are several threads in the official Garmin forum complaining about poor retention (loose fit, even rattling, tabs breaking).

just got an 840, fits great in the included mount, also fine in my syncros scott spark headset mount. But I got another cheap mount from ali, in which the 530 fits fine, but the 840 is very loose.
So the fit is definately different (less tight) compared to the 530 (which had been in use for a while)

I have no issues with the unit in my tarmacs stock mount. The charging cover does pop out sometimes when I hit a cattle guard too hard.

Thanks. I’ve seen a couple of posts complaining about loose fit even in the original Garmin out front mounts that come with it https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-840-series/347849/840-mount-is-not-as-snug-as-my-old-530

Do you have some play though? I’m not that concerned about the unit falling, but the loose fit/play, which could clearly result in the mounting tabs breaking/cracking
