None. It’s tight, not as hard to get in as the Vario. But that’s a aftermarket printed mount.
If I had your issue I would take my bike and Garmin to a LBS that has them, compare and see if you have a defect.
Tried a couple in store, they all have the same play (in original Garmin mount and also K-Edge). Never seen this with any of the older versions (820/830). 1040 is rock solid in the same mounts, but the 840 is rather disappointing in this regard
Unlike my 530, the 840 is a little loose in the K-Edge and Specialized mounts. Not loose enough to rattle or cause any signs of wear. Just noticeable when attaching. My 840 is 11 months old.
Tried it with a mount off the bike and when I shook the mount in my hand I could definitely see the unit move (that’s what I meant by “rattle”). Not enough to fall out of the mount but still easily visible.
Yes when rotating and clicking into place I can feel it. I’m an engineer (electrical, not mechanical) and not losing sleep over it.
Maybe I got lucky. I forgot to mention it’s a 840 solar. Could be the difference if it is made in a different factory.
My 840 Solar drains the battery ridiculously fast…I did a 3 hour ride yesterday and a 1 hour ride today and I was down to 45% battery life (and it was sunny yesterday).
Conencted to my PM, Varia radar, phone and I was using navigation yesterday. I bought this unit because of the supposed long battery life and I was going to use it at Unbound, but this is worse than my Karoo 2…by a LOT.
And I am only using GPS as my tracking, not the more accurate battery-draining options.
I just checked my 840 Solar and there is also zero play in the out-front mount
@Power13 needless to say that is highly unusual. I have mine connected to a PM, varia and phone as well and am only having to charge it every 2-3 weeks (24-30hrs). Have you done a factory reset?
@Power13 A 4 1/2 hour ride in Saturday using a Varia , power meter, gps tracking and heart rate monitor took my 840solar down to 89% of battery life left. It’s about 1 year old.
Yup…gonna contact Garmin and see what’s up. No way I should be burning through this much battery. Form the get-go, I ws using ~ 10% / hour.
Yeah that is super weird. I had something similar on my 520 and garmin replaced the unit. 1040 solar has been good so far with insane battery life while using navigation, connected power radar lights and hr.
Just got off the phone with them…they are sending me a replacement once they receive this one back. Said they have seen the problem on a few devices, so we’ll see how the new one performs.
Interesting… I’ve tried several new units with the out front mount and they all wiggled a bit once mounted. I wonder if there is some manufacturing tolerance variation in the mounting tabs? Or maybe Garmin implemented a running change?
Another user suggested the solar may be manufactured at a different facility to the non-solar which may account for slight tolerance variations?
Is that the case? I’ve only tried the solar versions. Can anyone with the non-solar confirm that there is no play at all in the mount?
doesn’t really make sense as the only difference between the 4 540 -840 models are the screens. I expect the case, back cover and mounting tabs are identical (to save production cost). Maybe there are different production batches for the tabs, some more loose then others
I have the 840 Solar, and I experience slight play both with Canyon’s mount and a K-Edge mount (for an S-Works Alpinist handlebar). The play is very minor, though, and absolutely not something I’d think about.
That kind of variation in tolerances is unacceptable for the price, imho. I’ve actually raised this in the official Garmin forum in response to a Garmin rep’s BS claim that there may be “some slight differences in the customer experience of different Edge products”. The difference is not slight at all. And they should really do a running change & replace the tabs for all affected customers (since they are replaceable in any case). But from what I hear, there’s a shortage of replacement tabs anyway (even dealers have had a hard time ordering them for customers who broke the tabs).
If the unit constantly moves due to the loose fit (esp. riding on bad road, not to mention mountain biking), the tabs will break sooner or later.
They may be designed to be identical, but I would expect, given the volume of units being manufactured, that they have multiple sets of tools for the injection molding process. If one, or multiple, sets of tools is slightly off from the design files, that could explain why some are reporting issues but others aren’t.
No idea if there is an issue here or not, however….just posing a theory on why there may be some differences between units even though they should be the same.
I’ve just tried another 840 (non-solar this time) in store and it has no play. When it snaps into place, you can still feel the difference from the 830, but at least it stays fixed in the mount.
It could be manufacturing tolerances. But I also wonder if some units may have the two tiny fixing screws on the back not torqued properly, which may lead to a loose fit?
