The 530 buttons were acceptable but took trial&error to learn. The 840 UI/UX is soooo much better, because you can use it somewhat like an iPhone but also use the buttons.
2x8-min well enough over threshold…
Almost 3 minutes at 1% stamina? Clearly it needs more power curve data. Disappointing it doesn’t seem to be using the stuff from my 530.
Same comment as above. WTF? Well it does say cardio fitness, I guess that seems ok, but not the tempo part
Has anyone experienced huge discrepancies in elevation data when imported to the 840, or other Edge device?
Here’s what I get for this years Unbound course:
- Ride with GPS from Unbound website: 9100 ft
- When ride with GPS imported to Garmin Connect on iPhone: 8250
- Course imported directly from Unbound website into Garmin Connect on iPhone : 9100
- When ride with GPS route synched from Garmin Connect to my 840 device: 5160
- When native Garmin Connect route synched with Edge 840: 5050
The biggest difference happens when the route is synched with the Edge device.
Any ideas?

Has anyone found a bar graph data field for Power Time in Zone? I know in the native data fields you can do a TiZ for individual zones, but I didn’t see something like this (from the Hammerhead Karoo 2):
Last weekend I rode a route with 6500’ of climbing.
syncing route from | 840 estimated climbing |
---|---|
RideWithGPS | 8100’ |
Strava | 6500’ |
For some reason syncing the route from RWGPS resulted in much higher estimates of climbing. The Strava route was pretty close to actual.
I find RWGPS and TR grossly overestimate climbing (can be double) compared to Strava/GC/Edge.
Yes, I have found that the best method is load your file to Strava and then move it to Garmin. Garmin just flattens out a lot of elevation.
Anyone upgrade from the 530/830 to 840? Freeride ClimbPro not a big deal for me. Better workouts screens for outdoor workouts and the Garmin course pacing might be useful. Anyway, how are you finding it and what’s the best new features?
I went 830 to 1040 (very brief stop at a 1030+) mostly for the screen size. I had an Explore 2 before the 830 so I was used to the UI. While I wasn’t getting the 1040 for new features, I really like the Power Guide and Stamina.
Upgraded from 530 to 840. Mostly love it. A large collection of screenshots that I posted above:
And some other comments:
And my first post on “new to me” features:
Thanks @WindWarrior. I read your posts above. I was just wondering now that people have had them 6+ months what is valuable and what is not. Something like Stamina could be a shiny new toy when new, but then get turned off after awhile if not providing any real value.
I’m just using and enjoying the basics… mostly running workouts while riding, and the 840 is a great upgrade from 530.
This is pretty standard across all devices. As far as the device, make sure the little hole in the back isn’t covered.
Outside of that, I know Strave and Garmin connect both have options to adjust the elevation based on your GPS file. This makes it so it’s not using the data from the device altimeter, instead it uses the GPS track to calculate it.
There is this one:
Time in Zone
The time elapsed in each heart rate or power zone.
I went from a 530 to an 840 Solar. I’m really happy with the move.
- Overall better UX. I love that I can do much of the config on the phone. On device UX is much more intuitive, though not perfect.
- Really like the Power Strategy support. I now mostly keep the Power Strategy screen as my default. I like how it incorporate Climb Pro during a climb.
- Solar was a nice to have — I got a great price from BikeTiresDirect.
- Light network support is clunky. I had to load a 3rd party data field to make it work as intended.
Went from 830 to 840 solar. I use mostly the basics so it’s pretty much the same to me. Climb pro is the one feature I love on the 840. Riding an unknown event it gives me info on how to pace the climb. While not exactly accurate as far as the start or finish of a climb, it’s close enough for me.
Just got a 840 after giving up awaiting TR workouts to come to the Hammerhead.
If I follow a route AND a workout, do I get pop up directions on the workout screen? Do I need to start them in a specific order or does it not matter?
@Chris47 what was the light issue and data field? Agree the light network is below average at best!
I think I was dealing with 2 issues. First, I think I added the light separately, not part of the network. I removed it, re-added it and then I was able to control it directly from the settings, without the 3rd party data field.
Second, I think there’s a general usability issue with the UX. The whole idea that you “override” the device mode with the light network settings. It’s a bit confusing. I was able to use the 840 settings override to set the modes correctly, but I feel I gave up the auto mode for the lights in the process.
I think it will. Ive never done it in a workout but if I’m in a general data page (as oppose to the mapping page), the garmin will pop up with the mapping page just before a turn, reverting after it. I tend to do workouts on familiar roads though where I’ve no need to be distracted by pop up routing.
