Garmin Edge 1040 Released

Got my 1040 Solar on Saturday and got it configured. I have to say Garmin has come a long way in terms of set up. This might be nothing new, but it was super easy to transfer over my devices and settings from my 1030. I then created a new Gravel Profile as well and set up my pages and fields on the unit itself. Everything felt really snappy.

Doing a 133 mile gravel race on Saturday, so I loaded the course into Garmin Connect on my PC and then sent it over. Garmin analyzed it and basic said it was really long and a lot of aerobic endurance would be need… no surprise there.

I played with the pacing plan in Garmin Connect. You plug in your bike weight, riding position, rider weight, FTP, and surface and it generates a plan. You can adjust the pace based on effort on a scale or 1 - 10 but it also lists as a percent effort on average of your FTP (basically IF). The times it gives for finishing though are a pretty broad range - about 2 hour spread (eg. 8 - 10 hours). It looks interesting, but will have to play with it in training before employing in a race.

Will do first outdoor road ride with it today and then use for the race Saturday.

Not sure it’s been answered, and maybe @gpl could chime in. Do the 1040 and 1040 Solar have the same chip? Like, are they the same as far as internals and ability (apart from solar)? Or did the Solar get a better chip and thus faster?

Not what you asked, but the extra storage is another differentiator.

I truly admire @dcrainmaker’s commitment to his craft. Standing in the pouring rain in shorts and t-shirt to demonstrate the touchscreen on the 1040 was above and beyond

doesn’t it have enough battery… lol… I will have my 1040 solar on Sunday and looking forward to taking it out on my first ride Monday morning…

My regular 1040 has been averaging about 2.5% battery use per hour, its crazy how much less energy it uses than my 1030 did. That’s with auto backlight and most of my rides being after 7pm at night and I can see the screen really lit up.

Super happy with the upgrade, it’s worked perfectly with zero issues.

I have to say I’m a bit miffed my mine this morning, third ride was the Thursday night group ride, started the device at the start of the ride, and the strava has been corrected and matches the 15 other people on the ride

But on the device and garmin connect

I initially presumed that the problem was at the start or end, but when I looked at the speed data, it seems to have had a paddy mid ride (I’m not using a speed sensor, was a lovely sunny day in england)

Data loss only seems to have happened to speed

Contacted Garmin support, but wonder f @dcrainmaker or @gpl have any thoughts, have just changed from HH2, having second thoughts,

Software version 12.11

Just looked at the merged group ride and you can see that mine took a short cut

bit disappointed to be honest

I initially thought autopause until I seen that drop out of the gps/speed :exploding_head:

… spokesperson for Garmin confirmed to BikeRadar that the hardware used in the new Edge 1040 is the same as the outgoing 1030 Plus…

So 1030 Plus and 1040 have the same hardware on board, strange, because the 1040 is the first with usb c, so there is a little different!

No, its pretty much stock only using the devices defaulted screens as they seem fairly good

Here’s the ride if it is of interest

The full quote is:
Besides the addition of solar charging, the USB-C charging port and GNSS-compatibility, a spokesperson for Garmin confirmed to BikeRadar that the hardware used in the new Edge 1040 is the same as the outgoing 1030 Plus.

But like what gplama said to my analysis of the benchmark run, maybe they are only looking at the parts people see like the screen and physical size, not the cpu inside. Or hopefully that is true

Anyone else not able to change the fields on the default workout screen? It gives me the option to change to a different field, but when I try to do so it reverts back to Distance and Timer. Not sure what they were thinking with the workout screen tbh. Who needs Step Distance, Distance and Timer when doing a workout??

I believe you cannot change the default workout screen at all. I think it is fixed. I have setup the screen that TR has in the video. If you do that I think you can turn off the default screen. But I have not tried it yet.

I’ve not tried it yet, but a post earlier in this thread says you can add fields to the workout screen

Thai is what mine shows with 2 extra data fields added to the workout screen

When I get my 1040 solar on hand Sunday will let you know even though I am mainly indoor workout person.
