Garmin Coach for Cyclists

Hey, I just stumbled upon this Youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvB79s-n7iU regarding, what seems to be, a new Garmin feature. Garmin Coach for Cyclists. It looks a lot like what TrainerRoad is offering, including the plan based on availability, goal, discipline, event and apparently some adaptative feature based on the data collected by devices (like Garmin watch, power meter, etc).

There is also this blog post Garmin Coach Training Plans for Cyclists | Garmin Blog which is from September 19, 2024, and this article Garmin Cycling Coach | Garmin Technology which gives more details about how the whole thing works.

Have you seen this announcement? It’s new, right? Any thoughts about it?

They might be re-launching it or something. It’s been out there for a bit: Thinking of trying my Garmin's workout suggestion for a while!

Garmin Coach plans are static.

They do have adaptive plans, like everything in Garmin eco, they’re not clear to manage and buried under a name “Race Widget”

It might just be the wording, but according to the Garmin article OP posted, “ Using an adaptive training program such as Garmin Cycling Coach gives you flexibility. You have the freedom to skip workouts without derailing your program. If you miss a workout, the analytics engine will adjust your training plan accordingly. However, skipping too many workouts leading up to your event or goal could impact your end result. If you perform workouts outside of your plan, the program will adapt to ensure that the next workout is best suited to your needs.”

I tried a plan ages ago on my then edge 1040. Entered a race info, course details, it then gave me a plan that adapted 7 days ahead based on what I was doing. I guess they have released it onto their watches.

Indeed, they have…

Yeah in which case they are incorporating the old race widget into the plans.

They have had the ability to adapt training based on load and recovery for the last year or so, it just wasn’t under Coach plans.

I don’t see the adaptive option in my Connect it must be because I don’t have recovery metrics after I got rid of my Forerunner 965. I tried adaptive plans for a while but they didn’t work as well as TR or Runna.

Hi,

So, no one tried this new garmin coach? Really seams pretty similar to what TR is offering. Cant find any reviews online.

Tried it for 3 weeks. Honestly, it seems to be a “Daily workout suggestion” rebrand except that you define a goal.

In my case, I set it to “Improve my fitness” aiming to improve my FTP. I set my availability for 7 days a week thinking it would give me rest days appropriately, and well, it didn’t ahah. I basically trained for 21 days in a row. Mostly base training, with 2 “hard” workouts a week. Either 2 threshold workouts, either 1 threshold workout and 1 anaerobic workout or vo2 max workout.

So if you want a rest day, make sure to only set 6 days available a week. Apart from that, I think it’s decent and provide a bit of structure but it’s not that adaptative and not as pleasant as the experience I’ve had with TrainerRoad. The thing is still in development bth, I faced multiple bugs where workouts were not in sync between my Edge 1040 and my Fenix 7 Pro, or at one point, the whole plan disappeared from Garmin Connect when I restarted my Edge device.

So a meh experience for me.

Hi. An old topic I know but just doing a sense check. I decided to run a Garmin Cycling Coach Plan (adaptive) alongside my TR plan to see the difference. I used the same number of days available per week so both prescribed the same number of training days. Both also prescribed the same number of hard days, 2 per week, with the rest being endurance. What I found is that Garmin seems more polarized (hard days are hard, easy days are easy), and prescribed more volume.

Given this, I am considering following the TR plan when riding inside on the trainer, and Garmin when I am riding outside, as I prefer the extra volume outside.

Has anyone played with more than one plan when riding in and outside?

No, I’m not sure why you’d do that. Seems like making things hard for both TR and Garmin to give you the right workout.

I do use Garmin Coach for running sometimes. It’s a bit frustrating as you can’t adjust your week, but you can select a future workout to do today to get around it somewhat.
