Dylan Johnson's "The Problem with TrainerRoad Training Plans": it's gonna be a busy day around here

Sure you have your opinion and I have mine.
People are allowed to be different.

Feeling yuge, still can’t catch up to your valuable amount of contributions to the topic though :sleepy:

That’s too bad. Maybe cutdown on some intervals and see if that helps.

I worry about this too. There’s an entertainment factor and show of the podcast but I’m also in a position of power and that can be abused.

To try to combat this we have an anonymous feedback system called TinyPulse. We do biweekly anonymous surveys about employ happiness, organization and other feedback

Our employee NPS and happiness is far above industry averages. Our employees regularly type in things that they don’t like that I/we are doing and I address them all via CEO videos.

So I do get constant anonymous feedback of what we do well and what we do poorly.

No one has mentioned any of the banter on the podcast before. But that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be hyper aware.

Anyways, I think your criticism is valid and something all people in power should watch out for.

And he makes good YouTube video content, based on scientific research (which he is scrupulous about citing), which I find useful as well as entertaining.

I love the banter, there’s a reason the podcast is so popular. (Almost) everyone loves the podcast and it’s a great product. Personally, I just wish there was a masters program option.

As long as you don’t abuse that power to make staff sing happy birthday for you :joy:

Happy birthday.

Now where is that masters plan for old farts?

Only speaking for myself here, but I’m sure I’m not alone, any criticism of the banter I have, isn’t that you do it, but rather it’s for things I’m not interested in. But I wouldn’t request that you change because I’m only one person and what I want more of may not apply to others.

I don’t think anything that is said or done on the podcast should be confabulated to office ā€œanticsā€. It is a show and I think most people recognize this. It’s not like you are on a reality TV show following you around the office as you tell your dev’s you could of coded something in 5 lines or less! (although that might make a funny April fools video)

I like the banter - and I really like all the cape epic stuff.

Thanks for responding constructively Nate. For what it’s worth I get value from Dylan’s videos as well as from the TR podcasts: it’s not about black and white, or ā€œI’m right, you’re wrong!ā€, but about helping as many folk as possible to get the most from their training so they can improve. Justindoestriathlon makes a good point in his video on this debate about TR introducing more customisation. It would be really great if you had an update on the much talked about and even more eagerly anticipated plans to cater better for older (e.g. over 50) tR users, such as myself (soon to be over 60 … ). Cheers.

That’s a really good system to have in place and I strongly feel that more companies should do the same.

To me, everyone seems to be enjoying the banter.
They mostly try not to be too hard on you Nate

I could be wrong but I think that bio may not have been continuously updated. I’m fairly sure I remember him having coaching experience before TR so I think that may have been 10 years of experience prior to TR.

I usually skip past the podcast banter, anecdotes and bro talk. I’m sure others like it. Me, I’d rather have Chad or Amber (when applicable) do deep dives on the training science. I also like the quick answers to the rapid fire questions. For me, it goes off the rails when a 10 minute Chad deep dive turns into a 25 minute segment because of all the back and forth n=1 anecdotes.

But I realize that that is what I like so it’s not a criticism. From other meta topics we know that some people love the banter and chit chat. And some people love it when the podcast is 2h+.

Well. This video describes my experience PRECISELY.

1st year - I got burned out after 4-5 months - had to abandon build phase. Still got some 1st-year gains, so didn’t worry about it too much.

2nd year? It was a shit show. Couldn’t finish ā€œsweet spotā€ medium. My FTP kept going down for many months, and I felt increasingly exhausted. The last drop was when I re-started base plan, and failed during 3rd workout (the first ā€œrealā€ workout, after ramp test and recovery ride).

I still use TR to execute workouts (for some reason, I enjoy it more than zwift). But TR plans? Hell no, I build them myself, and they work way better for me. So, yeah, I am one of those people for whom Sweet Spot/Threshold training is not even a viable option - and TR plans are mostly that. I’ll admit though, my muscle fiber composition is probably quite different from typical/average, as there is some data to prove it.

Nate thanks for this. I think it’s fairly obvious that, at least from an outsiders perspective, you come across as someone who values your staff as people and would not knowingly put people down.

I’ve worked with multiple people previously who DO berate staff, and belittle them as people. Some of them have the capacity to turn it off and act professionally when they need to. None of them, in my experience, have had the capacity to even FAKE empathy for other humans. I think the fact you at least make an effort to understand and respect your staff speaks volumes.

Pretty impressive and self aware comment. I was always curious about how this banter was going over. I know you are friends and have good rapport / culture, but with the power imbalance I sometimes cringed slightly thinking how this could be taken.

As someone who loves the banter, I have wondered this and love your response. This may sound strange, but the podcast themes go far beyond cycling to me. I really feel like listening to Amber, you, and everyone else discuss self efficacy and facing criticism make me a better person and a better parent. Perhaps this is why there are so many devoted listeners! I am really looking forward to the podcast episode discussing the Dylan video not just to see the conversation grow on the sweet spot/rest discussion, but also to see an example of how to beneficially respond to and grow from critical feedback.

I may be in the minority, but I love the back and forths about who will win Cape Epic!

How well did you find your RPE end HR correspond with the intended intensity of the workouts? My impression from reading countless forum posts, is that a lot of us, are working with too high FTPs. FTPs we could not hold for longer than 20-30min.

Effectively making Sweetspot workouts Threshold, Threshold workouts to be supra threshold and so on.
