-For the animals
-For the environment
-For less packaging (I make my own almond/oat milk; I can’t make my own cow milk)
-For health
My daughter is allergic to milk protein and soya meaning we needed to find an alternative.
Oat milk (the type fortified with Calcium) is the best option we’ve found.
It’s got decent fat and carb content. Better than alternatives environmentally as most oat production is used for animal feed so it’s displacing something already produced rather than promoting deforestation and new agricultural efforts.
I still drink some cows milk but have switched up for my coffees at least.
I’m not a baby cow, so I don’t need cow milk.
are you a baby oat? teehee im so funny
on a serious note, i used to drink Almond Milk with my protein shakes
then i switched over to oat milk…
but i’m still using whey, cause pea protein and soy protein give me anaphylactic shock (let me tell you, it was not a great surprise to discover those)
I avoid dairy milk because I didn’t drink it growing up and don’t like the taste of plain milk. I do use it for milkshakes because oatmilk and almond milk aren’t as tasty with ice cream. I also will use it for baking purposes.
Otherwise I use almond milk for cereal and shakes.
Halfway house for me.
I am not a big milk drinker, i make my own oat milk for recovery drinks (about 3l/week)
Other than that, the milk i pour in my tea is dairy, and, being french, I have a little something about cheese.
Main reasons for switching over is:
- fat content
- packaging
- environmental impact
For a different perspective, I can happily drink 2-3 litres of dairy milk a day when I’m exercising heavily. Milk has a nice balance of 4g fat, 4g protein, 5g carbs. I enjoy some almond/oat milk in a latte for a change, but they don’t offer the same nutritional balance for me as dairy milk.
I suggest you start a company that makes a “Fermented Almonds” or “Fermented Soy” to set a trend.
This is before we get to the whole aspect of animal abuse, where cows are artificially inseminated and their babies are taken away (males are generally killed), causing mothers an enormous stress… over and over again. The fact alone makes me want to stay away from that industry as far as I possibly can.
It’s nut juice. Call it what it is ![]()
Actually in the EU it is illegal to brand with the word milk to any of the non-dairy alternatives. It’s usually called beverage: soy beverage, almond beverage, etc.

We haven’t had proper Dairy Milk since Kraft/Mondelez bought Cadbury and changed the recipe ![]()
I usually keep Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk and I think it’s Lactaid brand lactose free milk in the fridge. I’m very tolerant of lactose and have consumed large amounts of milk all of my life but I do like the lower calorie nature of the almond milk and it tastes good to me when I use it in various things. Both have really good shelf life and that makes my shopping easier as I can buy a couple gallons of both and know that they’ll be good for a long time if unopened, though they do well once opened too.
The lactose free milk I keep for cooking (works great) and for a coffee drink now and again. I think Fairlife tastes good but it seems the Lactaid brand steams a bit better to me? I didn’t do extensive trials, but I think there’s a difference. Neither is quite as good a “real” milk in coffee but they’re a lot more convenient and good enough.
Almond milk lasts way longer in the fridge, after opening

I drink them all. But I think the fats in almond milk are also more omega-3. I could be wrong but they all have their place. Can’t make pancakes with almond milk. Coffee needs cream for me. Cereal gets almond milk.
Taste for me - I hate the flavour of cow’s milk, dairy free alternatives arent all that great, but a lot better than dry cereal!

Second unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk! It’s not super strong, but to me the added vanilla flavor tastes much better than dairy milk. Plus, it’s only 30 calories/8oz with no sugar, and is fairly cheap when I get Kroger’s generic brand.
I’ve also found that using vanilla almond milk makes it more tolerable to use plain nonfat greek yogurt, which seriously cuts back on the calories and sugar vs flavored greek yogurts. For whatever reason, I like how Almond milk mixes with oats, granola, or cereal, maybe because it’s a little thicker and more flavorful than the skim milk that I was drinking previously.
Only when it’s on offer in Sainsbury’s… i.e. NOW!
