We rescued a puppy with the same name as my mom’s nickname. We were able to get him trained for a different name. Imagine calling him and driving mom nuts…

I think Mercedes originally came from a daughter’s name and the auto engineer father wanting to name something after her.

My favorite is when someone chooses to name a girl with a name sounding like Portia but spells is closer to Porsche, but never exactly the same.

In several cultures, especially Spanish-speaking ones, Mercedes has been a common name for many centuries. I wasn’t aware Germans/Austrians used it as well, but it’s very old indeed.
