Creating workout and preview workout - noob Q

Hi I just subscribed ytd and is very new to the platform.

Q1. Can I create my own workout in Trainerroad? I would like the AI to then consider my workout (after it is done) into the planning and creating new adaptations to the current training plan.

Q2. Can I preview all steps of the workout? For example:
5mins 80W
5mins 80W - 120W
10mins 150W
20mins 100W
Just previewing so I have an overview. Currently I am using the mouse and mentally calculate the duration, which is very annoying.

Thanks in advance. I tried searching the forum but seems like I don’t know how to search efficiently yet.

Hey @HotCooler

Welcome to the forum!

We do have our own Workout Creator! Check out the link below.

One thing to note, though, is that we can’t guarantee that the Workout Levels generated for custom workouts will always be perfectly accurate. Sometimes the levels are a bit inflated, which can artificially pump up your Progression Levels.

This is most common in workouts with sprints or really tough high-intensity intervals, but it’s worth being aware of if you’re going to use the Workout Creator.

Let me know if you have any questions along the way!

Hey Eddie, so thankful you replied!

Thank you for pointing me to the right direction.

In terms of creating workout, and have the AI adaptation based on the workout results AFTER the workout, should I.

A. Build my workout in garmin, set trainerroad as indoor ride. Complete workout in garmin and sync to trainerroad?

B. Build my workout in TR workout creator. Use erg mode complete the work out?

My intentions are, to complete the created workout, have the AI compute the efforts AFTER workout and recommend adaptations based on TR’s training plan + my created workout.

PS: I intend to only do 1 self-created workout per week and follow the other 4 days from trainerroad.

Why is it that you want to create your own workouts, instead of just having TR schedule all of them? What benefit are you hoping to achieve from this method?

I would like to simulate a race pace, conditioning my body towards the acceleration and course of the route. I am not doing it as a standard, but will start doing it once a week around 4-5 weeks before race day.

Yet, I do not want my training plan to miss out this workout AFTER it is done, when TR recommends new adaptions.

I personally don’t know anything about building a workout within Garmin, but I’ve used the TR Workout Creator a bit. If you’re going to do the workout indoors that’s probably the cleanest way to do it.

But if your preference is to do the workout outside, just be aware that workouts created in Workout Creator are not currently able to be sent to head units. If you can remember the workout off the top of your head, or write it on a cue sheet & tape it to your stem, you can skip the step of sending it to your Garmin, complete the ride following your power targets, then when the ride imports into TR you can associate it with the workout you created.

What will these custom workouts look like?

If they’re complex and simulate an entire race course, it might not be the best idea to try and use them to feed your Progression Levels. Additionally, your time might be better spent following a training plan that’s tailored to your event.

As I mentioned earlier, oftentimes custom workouts can have misleading Workout Levels, and when using them in conjunction with a TR training plan, it can throw your progression off pretty quickly.

Rather than focusing on the highly specific nature of your race, I’d recommend following the plan that’s designed to build the fitness needed to perform well at your event. You’ll get plenty of race specificity in the Specialty phase.

Additionally, any fitness you gain by doing outside rides/race simulations will show up during your next few workouts, so don’t worry too much about finding ways to communicate that work to the software. We’ll analyze all of your work regardless of whether it has a Workout Level attached or not.

If those next few workouts are in ERG mode exactly as prescribed, how does TR detect the increased fitness?

As you become more fit, you’ll perform better in workouts.

Of course, fitness gains aren’t instantaneous, but if you’re following a TR plan, we’ll recognize your progression.

My point here is that you don’t need to track every activity that you do with a Workout Level or Progression Level. Your fitness will show through your work as you continue to progress through prescribed workouts.

I didnt know Workout Level is a Trainerroad term initially.

So what you are saying is that self created workout do not have an accurate Workout Level. But after the workout, Trainerroad can accurately analyse the results.

Yeah, we can’t guarantee that the calculated Workout Levels for custom workouts will be 100% accurate all the time.

The problem there is that TR will still analyze those workouts in the same way as the workouts from our own library.

Since custom workouts in comparison to TR workouts have the potential to be like comparing apples to oranges, it is possible that those custom workouts could negatively affect your training when following a TR plan.

For best results, we recommend following one of our plans without adding in weekly custom workouts.

That doesn’t mean that you can’t still do those race simulation rides if you’d like, but it’s best not to try and find a way to get Progression Level credit for them. As of now, there’s not a really good way to do that. PLs aren’t the only measure of fitness anyway!
