Can I skip base phase for subsequent plans?

I’m intending to do FTP builder training plans … one after another… indefinitely… (I have no events, no goals (maybe 4.5wg in 3 years?)

Do I always need to do base - build - specialty? Or can I skip the base phase on my 2ñd plan onwards?

I never had an onboarding session (I did free trial in '22 then returned in late '25) … so just fumbled my way through the setup and started cycling.

If you use custom plan I think you can set a date from few weeks ago. Also there are legacy plans with base, build and specialty to choose from. I will suggest to use custom plan with back date so you can benefit from the TR ai

Recipe for burnout in my opinion. Doing hard intervals indefinitely can be a major grind and may actually be unproductive.

TR base phases are generally stacked with hard interval sessions in any case and likely lead to a higher FTP.

Personally I look forward to a base phase after months of v02max.

Don’t skip it. Base phase builds the aerobic foundation you need to actually handle the higher intensity of build and specialty. I tried jumping straight back into build last season and just ended up burnt out after three weeks

Hey @Neil_Partridge

I wouldn’t skip Base. It’s the foundation that makes Build actually work. Chaining Build blocks back-to-back without a Base reset can lead to burnout and plateaus.

Since you don’t have a target event, I would set your training plan as General Fitness>>Increasing FTP, and you can set it up to be as long as 10 months. TR will build you the appropriate Base>>Build>>Specialty patterns to keep your training consistent and build upon each block.

Thank you. My current plan ends just before a holiday (no cycling, just red wine and croissants!). I’ll then start a new 10 month plan after that.

If you don’t have proper base don’t start from build…I assumed you had. Enjoy the gains

Im on my second plan … i have done base in both of them. My question was around future plans … i.e. do i still need to do base each time (and the answer seems to be a resounding yes!)
