Calendar Overhaul Feature Ideas

Nate’s post on first rewriting the web calendar and make that the basis for a new calendar in the desktop app:

Note that the mobile apps are not mentioned, so it seems that there are no plans to replace the calendar on the mobile app. Plus, TR considers to discontinue the mobile calendar:

That’d mean people who use TR only on mobile devices they’d be left without a way to access a lot of basic TR functionality.

At present you can use the web calendar on a mobile device, too. However, if the mobile calendar is dropped, then people using TR only via a “mobile” device couldn’t access calendaring at all. (I do all my TR workouts on an iPad.)

You can do that now.

One more piece of caution: on the Mac when your calendar deems my window too small, I get the mobile calendar.

To add to the mix, weight of views: Major things:

  1. definitely want the ablity to copy annotations. I use this a lot
  2. Being able to add in strength and stretching sessions, separately. When I have, they have added to my hours cycling which I don’t want (and make have added to my TSS - I forget now).
  3. Recurring event plans such as stretching, weights would be good.
  4. Add note when FTP changes (or AIFTP used but stays same)

Minor things:

  1. Being able to set a colour, for a type of
  2. Weather is so local I am not sure it adds anything. I just look at the local weather app. Unless I can link it to the UK met office (or an equivalent reliable source) for our locale. (so making weather optional would be good)
  3. Achievable, Productive, etc marking prevalent on all workouts, not just those in the past. this seems a good idea. Have often wondered, though recognising it will change with progression, so at least for the current week.
  4. Having a plan that starts of a Monday, even though I may have rescheduled/replanned the plan on a wednesday - at the moment I have to go through the plan and move the week numbers and names to the to the monday.

I find it helpful to abbreviate the workout description so it fits in an annotation, and then I can see what is scheduled and also copy that abbreviation to Garmin & Strava. eg

  • “Carson +2 is 9x5-7-minute intervals between 88-94% FTP totaling 54 minutes of Sweet Spot work. Intervals are all separated by 2-minute recoveries.”
    becomes
  • “Carson+2 SS 9x5-7m@88-94% =54m 2mR”

I am not suggesting that this be adopted as I have my own way of shortening the workouts, but sometimes I would like the Annotations to be more than one line.

Thats all for now  Thanks @Nate_Pearson

Edit for clarification: I’ve interpreted Nate’s comment of dropping web calendar for mobile as meaning replacement of the web calendar with the mobile app. If Nate means, ‘for web calendar access on a mobile device, we’d direct them to the mobile app calendar’, then I would’ve commented differently. Chur

I use the web calendar because it offers the following that mobile app doesn’t.

  • easy overview of the month eg. month view.
  • easy scroll forward (in time) to adjust time off, easy scroll back for adding notations
  • easy ability to see previous workouts/training schedule for similar to plans from previous months /years
  • allowing the web view on one screen and using another screen for planning websites/web apps (like weather, BBS and RidewithGPS). In one easy sit, I can quickly get planning for the week or weekend done. I don’t have time to fuss on a small screen and app switch back and forth; not as a time crunched father of 4 working full time and training for Nationals.
  • I don’t use the Windows/MacOS apps. I don’t want the hassle of supporting apps across the mulitple devices I use across home and work (at work no install allowed).

So, the glass real estate of mobile just can’t provide what I need. Or, I don’t see or know how it could without really messy workflows and wasting time.

That all said, I do understand the low use scenario with respect to investment. Please find a way to use a shared code base and keep the web calendar for web access on the larger glass of laptop/desktop.

Thanks, your passionate web app user :slightly_smiling_face:

ps - for actual workouts, I use mobile app for erg and Wahoo bolt outdoors (& also maybe 0.01% Garmin watch).

One feature in the calendar I would appreciate is the ability to schedule a repeated race series. We can schedule repeated workouts, and add races one-by-one, but when there is a weekly race series spanning months, it gets a bit tedious right now.

I didn’t process the “Desktop” part of app. I agree that dropping calendar support from mobile devices entirely would be a huge mistake.

  • For clarity, I think “entirely” in your comment should be replaced with “via a web browser” from what I believe Nate was describing.
  • It will still available in the actual TR mobile APP, just not via WEB browser on mobile.

This goes to the interpretation of this line from Nate’s initial post (emphasis mine). Does this mean that it won’t make it into the mobile app? Or is the use of “desktop” in-front of “app” a typing slip?

We’re starting a project to modernize the calendar on our website. That code will then make it into the desktop app later.

OK, I see what you are questioning now.

Hopefully he will return and answer that along with the other questions above.

Also - give outdoor workouts the graphical display. It gives far more info at a glance, and can even be used to decide whether the workout is appropriate to your location - or if you are in an area where long or intense intervals would be more difficult.

Additional thought: the analysis available on the mobile web calendar is significantly better than the app. If that goes away I will not be able to do simple things as select an area of the workout and view stats for it. Obviously I’m hoping for more analytics, but this is a bare minimum feature, along with being able to view the details of a workout (and to be honest I wouldn’t have to use the web if the app did this).

Will we also expect the greater workout search function to migrate to the app?

Would love to see outdoor workouts show the workout graphic like indoor workouts.
indoor-outdoor

While the zone and progression level are useful, that clearly doesn’t give the same information that the graphic gives at a glance. I often travel, and sometimes have to adjust outdoor workouts to match the local terrain/traffic conditions. Seeing the graphic lets me see quickly how well suited the workout is to my location (or what I feel like that day).

Surprised I haven’t seen the following suggestions:

  • Kitten of the day photo
  • I’m feeling lucky workout (surprise me)
  • Comic Sans mode
  • Security: “Are you a cyclist?” WAF challenge screen (select all squares that have a Pantani saddle in them)
  • Work mode (disguise calendar as work meetings)

Tea break is over. Glad I could help, you’ll thank me later.

If this gets fixed and nothing else, I will be very happy.

This would help linking it to my work calendar as now they are just private meetings at 3pm on Tuesday and Thursday.

That’s correct. But a lot of calendar functionality is only available on the web (and perhaps the desktop apps, which I never use).

Yes and no: a few years ago when TR rewrote its mobile app, a lot of basic functionality was cut from the mobile apps. E. g. I cannot add annotations or check whether I have hit my power targets in the intervals. I also cannot drag-and-drop workouts.

Note that the mobile calendar does some things the web calendar cannot, e. g. easily pick alternates. The mobile app juxtaposes the original and the proposed alternate workouts side-by-side, which allows you to understand why one is harder than the other. The web app cannot do that, you’d have to switch between tabs.

I never use the mobile app for riding but i do use it to check my run or swim sets if i am away or get somewhere and forget what im supposed to be doing.

+1.

And how about voice activated security where you have to correctly pronounce “Mathew”? :joy:

I would also like this! But it is not a change related to the calendar, but a change related to the trains.

Please show the personal records (PR) on all platforms, not just in the web calendar. It is the main reason why I open the web app in addition to the MacOS calendar.
