Best way to “scale” workout

I tried to do “avalanche spire +1 “ today and got CRUSHED. I only completed 1/5 work blocks without a break. I knew after that I could not complete any of the remaining blocks the way it was intended. I didn’t know whether it would be better to turn down the intensity or split each of the work blocks into 2 four minute blocks with about a 30 second rest in between. I choose the rest but wondering what others would do.
