I did some training in the basement without a fan but didn’t go overboard. Less than 10 workouts, and they were mostly Pettit and other easier stuff. This race was in Augusta, GA, and was about 70%+ humidity and 90+ degrees. I’m also a smaller guy at 60 kg and 5’6", so heat doesn’t have as much of an adverse effect on me as bigger people.
From elevation perspective the boost in power and recovery (and even HR) is very noticeable. I live in a dry climate and going to Tulsa is always an eye opener from the humidity perspective, but I find that I acclimate to that far quicker than the elevation. I find the benefits of coming down to race last the entire time I am there, whereas the heat adjustment takes the first travel day and then first 45min each day out of the hotel just to get used to the warm humid air. But not suffering from runny nose due to cold dry air almost offsets that as well.
I’m interested in trying out beetroot and beta alanine. What’s the best dosing regimen for each? Also, any product recs for either?
Thanks!
Live in CO as well. I live a bit higher, 8600’ or so. When I was at Gateway, I found the first day to be surprisingly hard. Maybe it was the humidity (we all had ice socks for warming up and for the race) or just the travel. But, as the days went, I got stronger and by the last day I was clearly one of the stronger racers in our group. Had a successful four days of racing that’s for sure. I was using my air relax space boots and topical edge religiously though. Was on top of my sleep and nutrition as well.
@Nate_Pearson Any chance you could share your nutrition spreadsheet (if you already haven’t)? ![]()
Which spreadsheet?
I recall you referenced one during the podcast that had different foods that worked out to a 2:1 glucose to fructose ratio.
It was just honey stringer chews. That’s a 1:1 ratio. I did some math with that and sis gels that are 100% glucose to figure out how I could get the right ratio.
What were the names of the two Sport Scientists that Chad mentioned ?
This is what I heard while skipping my workout for various reasons and finding myself working in the backyard:
Also heard:
Maastricht University in the Netherlands which I’ve had the pleasure of visiting because of work (#humbleBrag)
Great - many thanks
Thanks!
On the podcast Nate mentioned that he thought the 200% limit was either already removed or would be soon. Tried it this morning on ios and still limited to 200%. Any update?
Ah, sorry. I know it’s on the list to update soon.

Made my account just for this.
With Jessie’s question about having an active job it sounds like to me he is asking about physical recovery and NOT mental stress which is where the conversation drifted… Can you address the physical side of having an active job and recovery?
I think the gist of what we said is; it will have an impact, but if you’re used to it, it will have less of an impact. It’s hard to quantify.
Jeukendrup is a good source. But you always have to check, who pays his cheques. He works sometimes for/with big companys. So just keep that in mind.
Hear @Nate_Pearson say buying caffeine pills at a gas station made me wrinkle my forehead. America is sometimes strange. But it shows why you have such a great respect for supplements and the ingredients. In Europe you can take a look at some lists eg Kölner Liste: Background.
As is, there will be a disclaimer in the article.
However, that is also why there is a peer review process.
