It was funny though - even on the GCN app (with no ads), you could tell from Carlton Kirby’s commentary exactly where the Eurosport ad breaks were, as he would build up to some nonsense hyperbole (as is his style) just ahead of the break, then immediately dial it back and continue the regular commentary for GCN.
Good coverage though, enjoyed Marty and Dani Rowe’s commentary on the women’s race.
Are you just watching on your phone then? You can’t cast it and keep that VPN connection for the casting device (unless you have your whole router through a vpn), right?
I just used chromecast as normal, and I don’t have VPN set up on my router, since it’s not fancy enough. I didn’t expect it to work, as you alluded to. However for me that wasn’t an issue, as I’ve got a Samsung phone and TV, so I could just screen mirror if needed. That could be a solution on most android phones if it doesn’t work.
I signed up for it, its got a few things I find a bit buggy but at £20 its acceptable. For some reason until today I couldn’t rotate the phone to full screen without the picture going black. If it paused or buffers for too long on replays it goes back to the start instead of resuming in the same place (really annoying when you’ve been watching something for circa an hour). If I’m watching highlights on full screen it seems to be locked on the screen unless I close the app altogether. I’d like an Amazon/pc app so I can watch it in quality on a bigger screen.
I have used it to watch a few races so far, its mostly hassle free. I have had a few instances of it just displaying a black screen with audio or freezing/crashing but it has been fairly stable for the most part.
The nice thing compared to eursport (for mobile) is that you dont have to fake a GPS location, just start up a VPN.
I had an issue this weekend, where the race TV tab disappeared, but logging out and logging back in fixed it. However, now I have a new issue where chromecast doesn’t work, not sure how to fix that. However, despite all that, it’s still a pretty solid service.
I thought Flo was an interesting option, but at $12.99 a month, it’s on the high end of being pricey. That’s more than I pay for Disney and Appletv combined! Lol
I signed up to the beta program a while back and have been testing the GCN race pass web player over the weekend and it has been working great. I would guess it’s not far off release.
I don’t really get why this wasn’t ready from the start. Surely they could just have used a slimmed down version of the Eurosport Player, which has been solid for a couple of years now.
Have signed up for the race pass, but haven’t really used it yet, as the pain cave doesn’t have the wifi coverage to case (yet). Really hoping that Fire TV app comes soon to be honest, as I have that hard wired.
I’ll be considering dropping the eurosport player though - days behind on Tour de L’ain on demand. I feel a bit sucked into paying for both, but if it’s the same (or better) coverage and content, zero reason to keep eurosport player really once I sort casting. Can’t remember the last non-cycling content I watched on eurosport.
