Do you know if it works on an apple tv?
Just subscribed to GCN+ and checked beforehand:
And then searched App Store on my ATV and no app yet. So its AirPlay to ATV for now.
I’m hoping their FireTV app comes out by the end of the month so I can get the discount. I hate subscribing for something I can’t use yet.
I followed one of the online guides for side loading Google Play onto the Kindle and installed TR and the GCN app.
I think you might be able to load the beta web player in Silk but I haven’t tried that.
Could anyone who has subscribed and is using android check out the English subs please.
Support said that they didn’t have them, but Instagram social media person said they did.
Without subs it’s pointless for my house.
Thanks, I’ll check it out, didn’t even think of using the browser on the FireTV, I forgot it even had one. lol
The $25 for a year seems to good to pass up.
I wish they had a Roku app. Those are the smart TV’s we have and I don’t think I can cast to them without an app.
Not sure about a browser on them, but I don’t think so.
Having replays available very soon is a must for me.
Living on the West Coast, Euro races are on far too early in the morning.
Yep, I too would like a Roku app. The last few days I have been screen casting to Roku though via the GCN app on iPhone and iPad and has been working very well. Until a native Roku app arrives it’s good enough.
GCN app crashes trying to play videos on my generic androidtv (a few years old). Also, the app seems locked in a narrow portrait mode that doesn’t use my widescreen. Oh, and the mouse doesn’t seem to click most things in the UI – I have to use the keyboard to tab my way around and hope I can see the focus highlight. Overall, very clunky.
To salvage my watching I tried the webviewer in chrome on the same androidtv device. That worked, except once the video navigation UI disappeared, I couldn’t get it to appear again. So I only had 1 chance to scroll around the playback time. Even with the navigation up, I couldn’t get clicks on the fullscreen button to register, so I was stuck watching it windowed.
I guess I could use a PC to watch the webview, but that’s annoying. I’m not sure I can cast to my androidtv box, so that’s right out. I think what I’m going to do is reverse engineer the webview so I can code up an index that kodi can play from – because I’m hardcore like that.
I’ve just joined GCN+ and am getting that same server error for some of the races (am in Canada). Am thinking this may be related to VPN but currently unsure. Not a very informative errror.
Further technical issues on GCN Race coverage today:
-
extensive buffering when casting recorded material (eg. Stage 1 of the Tour Des Alpes-Maritimes). NB this is not a local issue, as connectivity is excellent and the Chromecast is on a wired connection;
-
No commentary on casted live coverage: content has correct commentary when playing on mobile devices but loses it all when cast to Chromecast; this occurred on Waaslandcross CX Womens and Tour Des Alpes-Maritimes Stage 2, ie. both of today’s live races.
Come on guys…
I didn’t have / not having any of those issues today. Watched the women’s CX race and had commentary and no issues with Tour Des Alpes. Some low image resolution / pixelation on Tour Des Alpes, but nothing that is not uncommon in broadcasting any moving, love event, and it resolves itself in a few seconds.
What device are you casting from and to?
iPhone 11 and casting direct to a Samsung SmartTV.
Thanks. The issues I’m seeing were casting from Android (Pixel 3a) to Chromecast.
-
I’ve now tried casting the Tour Des Alpes-Maritimes Stage 1 recording from iPad (Air 4) to the Chromecast: on the iPad the commentary is in English, but once casted to the Chromecast I get what sounds like Dutch or Flemish commentary, i.e the Chromecast is playing the wrong stream. Also get regular buffering on this.
-
Also tried casting from iPad Live coverage of Waaslandcross Men’s; when playing locally on the iPad the correct commentary is there, but once casted the commentary disappears, again indicating it’s using a different (incorrect) stream to what the iPad was playing.
So it seems the GCN app (both Android and iPad) has issues with passing on the correct stream details to Chromecast devices.
NB the Chromecast is a “Chromecast with Google TV”, so top of the line, and is on an Ethernet connection. The only video content which ever buffers and has ever buffered on this device is GCN recorded material, which it does regularly (see earlier posts of mine). I’m confident the cause of this buffering issue lies at their end and is not down to anything that I have much control over.
@Brian_GCN, are you aware of these issues: incorrect language/stream occurring in casted content, plus the (longstanding) buffering issues with casted recorded content?
Just a note, this definitely is longstanding and I’ve been having the issue since the initial launch last year. I’d have hoped it would have been fixed by now.
Live streams and full replays work very well, but highlights and recorded episodes of World of Cycling have consistent buffering issues, casting from a Pixel 5 to a Shield TV. I upgraded to a Shield TV from an older Android TV device in the hope that would fix it, but no luck. I’m really getting sick of it and will definitely hesitate in resubscribing next year.
How did you manage to actually get the highlights to play? I’m trying to watch Stage 1 highlights (using web player, with Chrome) and tapping the tile for the English highlights does nothing other than bring you back to the splash page for the event?
Same here. Subscribed to Race Pass when it launched last August(?) and this issue of buffering when casting recorded content has persisted, across multiple mobile devices, different Chromecasts, different geographic locations (different internet connections).
The problem was acknowledged by GCN last year - in this thread even - but it seems that no permanent solution has yet been “found”. For the past few months I’ve only been watching GCN recordings on an iPad (ie. no casting) while sat on the turbo, so hadn’t bumped into the issue for a while, and had hoped it’d been resolved by now. Persistent problems like this that severely impact usability destroy the value proposition.
Yesterday’s problem with the commentary of casted live streams being either lost or in the wrong language was a new one for me. I’ll try to see if this issue persists over the next few days and if so I’ll have to begin seriously hassling GCN about it else my subscription will begin looking pointless - unusable for casting of both recorded and live content!
I watched it using mobile devices.
I’ve just tried watching on Chrome using the web player as you mention, and it doesn’t work for me either:
- I click on the Stage 1 Watch Replay image in the main menu “carousel”
- Scroll down that page to reveal the tab menu and click on Highlights/Extra
- Click on English language Short Highlights option
=> All this does is scroll the page back up to the top, ie. there’s no actual media player displayed so you cannot watch anything!
I can watch other recordings on the web player in Chrome, but it seems that Stage 1 of Alpes-Maritimes is just missing. It is viewable on mobile, so try that if you have a device. Not missing much, though, as it’s only 2min long!
Watching gcn+ race pass on my pc now. Anyone know when the app for the apple tv should be out?
