Anybody buying new stuff just to help keep the local economy going?

Because they provide medically necessary goods to patients. However, tattoo parlors and hair salons are not.

To the north of you, liquor and weed shops are still open because it’s currently easier/safer for society at large to continue status quo rather to have an influx in the health care system of users going through withdraw and/or using product of questionable quality. Plus, the more people who are stoned, the less civil unrest. :+1:

Can imagine potato chip sales are also holding their own.

I’m saving on fuel now, so when this is over I’m going to treat the fast bike and get my local shop going again with totally unnecessary carbon bars.

Two tanks of diesel will cover the bars so it’s completely justified with man maths.

We are getting take out from local restaurants a lot more than we normally do to try help them stay afloat - not sure how long we will keep it up, but a few more weeks at least before we go to a more sustainable level.

Regarding liquor stores being essential - I was skeptical, but heard from a doctor friend of mine that he was doing emergency surgery on an alcoholic that went into withdrawal, and seriously injured himself when he went into convulsions. I guess stuff like this isn’t just hypothetical.

It’s definitely not hypothetical. If you are a serious alcoholic then the withdrawals can kill you. I don’t know how much you have to drink for that to be the case but it’s possible.

I also bought some running shoes and a few other things from a friend who owns a running store where I used to live. Gave him credit card over the phone and he shipped them to me.

He’s had to let his employees go and is trying to keep the store afloat on his own now.

I’ve had the same thought. I’m also buying so much from Amazon right now.

Both overloading the delivery system and not contributing to local businesses…

In CA they’re all closed too. I meant I would still pay him for the cut I was supposed to get this week.

Yup cannabis stores are “open”. Not much different with curbside pickup or delivery between a cannabis store or brewery. I see a lot of contentiousness about this. I’m for it. It’s legal and deemed medicinal.

Also, in Canada, booze & weed sales mean money in the gov’t coffers to pay for all the bailouts & stim packages.

I’m buying a lot more takeout than usual from restaurants I like to try to support them. The bars here are mostly closed, but some of them are doing some experimental takeout / delivery drinks. One of them, run by a friend of ours, did a delivery whiskey tasting with online video tasting notes.

Normally I wouldn’t spend this kind of money on takeout, but I have a job that easily went fully work-from-home (and our customer pays their bills), and I’d like for these restaurants to still exist in a month or two.

I’m pretty excited about the level of experimentation this has caused. A lot of places quickly have figured out how to update their websites, take online payments, do delivery, run meetings online, et cetera. We’ve got a lot of restaurants that have hammered together respectable takeout menus where there were none. We have a lot of local wineries doing online tastings, discounted shipping, that kind of thing. Maybe there will be some lessons learned for later on about what they’re capable of and what people are interested in.

Here in the UK, bike shops are still open. The government has decreed them esential. Can’t get there though.

An Espro dual screen French Press and Baratza grinder are all I need to be in Coffee nirvana. Well and Peet’s or Phiz beans of course.

Spare set of Bontrager V3 Wheels and 38 Schwalbe tires for the gravel bike. For chunky conditions.

Trying to hit up our favorite restaurants for takeout a little more often and tipping generously. But thus far my main ‘financial community service’ has been paying for a month and a half of childcare that I’m not going to use.

Same here. Paying our full time nanny not to come right now. :man_facepalming:

Right thing to do, but damn it hurts…

Good for both of you for doing that…

I find I am buying knicks and jerseys and other gear I don’t need, its called anxiety buying. Although my stress levels are low, everyone is affected by social anxiety at the moment. How it affects someone is different, when I’m overly stressed, I turn to alcohol. Others food. Some people spend money. Whats important is to be able to recognise it and then next time you feel yourself going towards that path have a talk to yourself. See if you really need to buy that item, or have that drink, or eat that food. Will it make you faster? Of course its easier said than done and we all fail at times.

I’m not going to ask events that get cancelled for refunds, but rather future credit if they offer it. I don’t think many promoters/organizers could afford to refund everybody without going bankrupt, and I want events next year. Realistically, even offering future credit will be a big strain for them.

Bike shop still closed but I bought some supplies just before the non-essential biz order in California went into effect. Just ordered two pair of bibs to replace a couple of 4-year old bibs, from a Central California company. Still going out twice a week, for pickup. Support your local businesses if you can!!!

+1 on buying :beers:… But also tipping very heavy to the drivers. Most of the drivers I’ve seen are just tenders trying to hustle just to make ends meet
