Anybody buying new stuff just to help keep the local economy going?

Had my LBS install my new grouppo last week…

We are trying to support local restaurants by ordering delivery about once every three days.

My wife is a barista and we went with a breville barista express (some day we want to get a lamarzocco for the house) and it really does the trick. Just watch some youtube videos on how to properly steam milk, that’s the key. 90% of the quality from a shop for a 10th of the cost of a manual machine. Perfect for after a cold morning ride.

Superauto espresso machines are fine for the office but for home nothing beats a semiauto and a good grinder. The updated Rancilio Silvia (called ‘Pro’) looks pretty sweet though. You can also find lots of older Silvias on the used market and add a PID kit on there - you probably have more spare time than usual anyway.

I wouldn’t say we are buying anything extra but we are tipping delivery drivers generously, for the reasons you give. We are also continuing to pay our cleaning lady even though she isn’t coming.

Kickr Core on the way! Pretty excited although not so much from doing another Ramp Test to level set the upcoming training blocks!

My anecdote (obvs. not data!): I bought a frameset thinking now would be a good time to support the industry and it didn’t ship for a week. The shop emailed every day to tell me that they were snowed under with orders and working flat out to fulfill them. The courier turns up to deliver and says “It’s a bike isn’t it? I’m delivering nothing but bikes today! Whole van load from Evans.” (not who I bought from but their main warehouse is just up the road in Crawley)

Isn’t Amazon organising orders & deliveries by priority now? Thus hand sanitizer will be shipping out immediately and bike parts will be there in a month. In theory this should decrease the overload.

@abartucciotto Manual Coffee machine, well worth it🤔. I spent far to much on one years ago. Never regretted it. Brings so much joy and energy😂.

Sort of? I’m not sure what the stated vs actual delivery time is, but I just spot checked a few prime shipping eligible options and looked like stuff would be delivered Thursday.

I think you’re correct, but I also think that bike parts are still shipping quickly because bikes are considered essential? I had to order some Park Tools last week to accomplish a repair on my own that my LBS would typically do and they still came to my house within two days. On the other hand, my dog ate my FireTV remote and I ordered that at the same time and it’s estimated delivery time is the first week of April despite also being a prime product.

FWIW, I ordered 3 samples of a competitors product (home blood pressure monitor) and was originally given a delivery date of April 23 by Amazon. It is now scheduled for delivery on Wednesday. :man_shrugging:

Already spent most of the government money that’s supposed to come in a few weeks (this is the US government).

  1. 7mesh bib shorts
  2. new tires due to running over a piece of metal and cutting the tire last week
  3. while looking at my maintenance log, noticed the wheels were over 4 years old, so ordered new wheels

Hopefully the money comes before the credit card closing date.:man_shrugging:

Nothing I would not have bought anyway but it is a bonus some things I was looking to buy were on sale like Rapha core bibs 25% off. Those never go on sale.

Yes buying new stuff online, but mainly home office and living room upgrades since we’re at home for weeks (maybe months?). No new bike or accessories, stuff, clothing, etc. Races & rides have been postponed or canceled and I have most if not all I need for the season if/when it starts back up.

Since local office stores are closed, we’ve had to order some items from Amazon but trying other companies directly from their site and just getting things to make life more pleasant for us at home. More like spring cleaning & upgrades for life at home!

Ahahaha! I think we’d all love to! Before all this happened I was hoping for some blowouts in smart trainers but that’s not happening anymore! I have a dumb trainer and a power meter so I don’t need one but I like the idea of erg mode and connecting the frame to the trainer. It seems like a cleaner setup and I’m expecting a newborn in a couple weeks. so I’ll be bringing it inside from the garage setup. My wife isn’t too keen on it tho.

My barber cancelled all my haircuts til May. I offered to continue paying him but he refused. I like him and want him to stay open!

My fave doughnut shoppe is also closed until she can rejig her ops. In the interm she’s selling gift certs for delivery when production starts rolling again (but mostly to pay her current rent). I couldn’t refuse.

I’d rather support my local econ, since that’s the one I live in, rather than a global monstrosity (AMZN, BARC, et al).

I’ve got new Rotor Chainset at the shop waiting to be fitted. Can’t get there for another 11 weeks so far? I’m in isolation.

Not sure if you guys heard, but I bought my wife a Peloton. Does that count? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Here in Washington State, all Hair Salons, Barbers, Tatoo Shops are closed by order of the governor. Cannibis Shops however are considered essential.
