📣🎉Announcing Custom Zwift Training Plans and Scheduled Zwift Races📣🎉

We’re excited to announce new custom training plans for Zwift goals, and an easier way to integrate Zwift races into your training schedule, both available today for every TrainerRoad athlete!

Custom Training Plans for Zwift

Some athletes use Zwift as entertainment while training for other events or goals. But for many athletes, success in Zwift is the goal, and just like any other goal in cycling, the best way to achieve it is with specific training.

That’s why we’re excited to announce new custom training plans for Zwift. If you’re sick of getting dropped from fast group rides, trying to improve your finish in Zwift races, or hoping for a better time up the Alpe, we’ve got you covered.

Add Zwift Training Plans to Your Calendar

To schedule a custom Zwift training plan, click “Training Plans” and then click “Create my Custom Plan”. On the next screen, choose “General Fitness”, and then, from the discipline dropdown, choose “Zwift”. From here, you can choose your specific goal within Zwift, set your plan’s duration, and customize your weekly schedule.

Add Zwift Races to Any Training Plan

It’s now easier than ever to add the fun and excitement of Zwift races to your training. Starting today, you can schedule weekly Zwift races into any training plan.

To add recurring Zwift races to your training plan, either edit your existing plan or build a new one and head to the Training Schedule step. Click the dropdown on any Hard Interval day, and choose “Zwift Race” as a training option to schedule weekly races throughout your plan.

Zwift races are tough, so you can’t set recovery or endurance days to be Zwift races, and we won’t schedule Zwift races during your recovery weeks.

Replace Individual Workouts With Zwift Races

Already have a workout scheduled but want to race instead? No problem! You can swap any scheduled workout on your calendar with a Zwift Race. From your calendar on TrainerRoad.com, simply right-click the workout and choose “Replace With Zwift Race”.

You can also use the edit menu to replace Group or Solo rides with Zwift races, both from TrainerRoad.com and from the TrainerRoad apps.

Zwift races might not display as expected on older versions of the TrainerRoad app, so make sure to update your app to the latest version.

FAQ

Do I need to connect my TrainerRoad account with Zwift to get these features?

Nope! These features are available to all TrainerRoad athletes. If you do have an active Zwift integration, your plan’s scheduled workouts will automatically sync to Zwift.

Will Scheduled Zwift Races Appear in Zwift?

Scheduling Zwift races on your TrainerRoad calendar won’t automatically select or enter you into any races in Zwift—you have the freedom and flexibility to choose any race that works with your schedule. Once you complete a race in Zwift, it will sync back to your TrainerRoad calendar and automatically match with your plan’s scheduled race.

Why add Zwift races to my calendar this way instead of as A/B/C events?

Many athletes compete frequently in Zwift races, treating them more as a regular part of their training than as full-blown events. If this describes you, the new Zwift race scheduling option helps you integrate these races into your plan more easily than ever before.

However, if you know in advance that you want to compete in a specific Zwift race and want to structure your training plan around it, you can still add it to your calendar as a traditional A/B/C event. Choose the discipline (such as criterium or rolling road race) that most closely matches the race.

Will there be a plan offering to ramp up for Zwift Academy? That seems like a time when at least some folks might want to be at a peak. It might be an interesting offering for TR and Zwift to work together with regard to the timing of ZA 2025 and the workouts/events to be offered, and then have TR offer a plan for people who want to be ready to go for those pro contracts (or at least give it their best shot).

That is a very cool idea! We’re always open to ideas of how we can make the feature more useful, so I will add this to our list of suggested improvements.

Do I have to pay for a Zwift subscription to have this working?

The features announced here are available to all TrainerRoad athletes, whether or not you have a Zwift account.

Our previously-announced Zwift integration (which allows you to complete your workouts within Zwift) does require a separate Zwift subscription.

I like this, something that would be complimentary in the future is to be able to replace endurance workouts with group rides on zwift. Granted it is more likely some people will go to hard and not get the right training effect it would allow more social participation in events like the current ‘big spin’ or ‘tour of watopia’ or even weekly group rides put on by the herd. In any case, I think that this is great stuff

My wife @theresa_d is doing the ZwiftGames right now … and cheering for this while she’s racing!

Another big win. Thanks @trainerroad !

Now that spring weather is approaching the northern hemisphere and the majority of users will switch from indoor to outdoor…would be nice to hear about other planned upcoming features and if WLv2 is still a thing at all?

BTW: No more roadmap talk @Nate_Pearson?

Great news. Just changed the Threshold session I missed yesterday into a Zwift Race, moved it to today and matched it up with the Zwift Games Stage 5 Race I did this afternoon. Awesome.

Kind of related to all of this on an anecdotal note, long time Zwift user that signed up for TR as soon as the integration went live, I immediately jumped into the low-volume plan of “Getting Faster for Group Rides: Gravel”. It was not what I expected–lots of punchy intervals with lots of rests. I did throw in Z2 rides on the off days provided it wasn’t a yellow day (but I never really had any from TR’s prescribed training). The sessions always looked hard on paper but I always was able to finish; only the final session of the three or four week block crushed me to where I finished but answered a 10 out of 10. Tonight I did my first group ride of the season–some were on winter pace mode but the bangers were showing up ready to rip legs off–and you know what? The training plan paid off–the ride was soooo surge-y and I was in the mix, it did definitely feel like some of the interval sessions! Although I’m not a huge partaker of the Zwift races/academy, if would def be neat to see the training plans tailored to that style. Been loving Trainer Road, keep up the good work!

This only works on a pc? Or does this work with the app as well?

It works on the apps, but you’ll need the latest update (released this week) to see it. So make sure to update your app!

Thank you, could you please explain how to do this in the app? Because when I try. I’m only able to select another workout (currently running a program)

Just checked my app was updated 2 days ago, so I’m on the latest version? 2025.11.0.92455

Sure thing. In the app, click on a scheduled workout, and from the workout details page, click the pencil icon in the bottom left.

From there, click the “Type of Ride” dropdown near the top:

And from the menu that appears, select “Zwift Race”.

Click Save and you’re set. You’ve swapped your workout for a Zwift Race!
