Hi, I have a short training plan for an event that’s now due in 12 days.
On the Sunday I was scheduled to have an endurance ride for only 45 minutes with a approx 45 TSS. I had more time than anticipated and used the trainNow feature with a 90 minute ride time.
AI recommended me a VO2 max workout Bluebell +2 with 4 sets of 6 x 1 min intervals.
Can someone please explain the logic behind this, I’m a masters athlete that completed all the workouts for the week that included tough VO2 and threshold workouts and I was recommended to perform 24 minute total intervals instead of the planned endurance workout. To me it makes no sense although I asked for a longer ride.
I cut the ride short and missed the last 6 x intervals as it was too tough to complete and in the back of my mind a masters athlete should do no more than 20 mins VO2 intervals in one workout.
The rest between each set of intervals was 5 mins and I’m guessing that allows for the extra set.
Couldn’t explain the logic, but is it not a bit hyperbolic to throw about cancelling from one Train Now suggestion? Obvs everyone is allowed their opinions and could be the straw that broke the camel’s back but as written?
An annual subscription is a big commitment which I’ve never had before on traineroad and I’ve only being using it for a few months, but if the trainnow recommendations are erratic , then I don’t want to rely on trainerroad for plans and workout.
I’ve now deleted the part you focused on to make sense of my query, but thanks anyway.
“Powered by Adaptive Training, TrainNow uses machine learning to analyze your recent performances and workout history and recommends a set of three workouts that would be best for you.”
I don’t think it looks at a plan, just what you are capable of doing and then gives you a few workouts. It does not seem to take into account your current training plan and adjust to that, as @GreenRyan88 said it’s probably better to use workout alternatives if you want something more appropriate to your current training plan.
Right. TN doesn’t look at your plan or your objectives/events. It only looks at what you’ve been doing and gives a few options as to what you can do, but not necessarily what you should do. If you want to do a different workout than what’s in the plan, you might choose from the alternatives then plan offers rather than use TN.
There’s a lot of good info here already. TrainNow isn’t designed to necessarily be used to replace prescribed workouts in a custom training plan. As others have mentioned, Workout Alternates is the place to go if you’d like to slightly modify your prescribed workout.
If your A race was 12 days out, the reason you had a 45-minute workout on deck was likely because you were entering a taper.. We shorten those workouts to allow you to get fresh for your event.
Hey @chacho I’‘m liking out resources just in case:
Workout Alternate: these are recommendations with a similar difficulty and workout profile as your original workout.
TrainNow: mostly used by athletes who are not following a training plan, as it will suggest workouts based on your recent training history (not your plan) so that you can quickly select a workout that matches the duration and workout type you’d like to do. It recommends an Endurance, Climbing and Attacking type to choose from.
I’m glad you caught this. I meant to comment on the original post and forgot.
OP - you said it recommended a VO2 workout, but don’t forget it also recommends an easy workout every time too. I injured my back last week and have been using TN to fill in the blanks while I recover and have my plan paused for injury. TrainNow’s first workout recommended to me is a hard one, but if I just scroll down, there’s also a moderate and an easy one there, so I just pick the easy one. TN doesn’t know I’m injured, so it’s probably recommending the one that a fully healthy me hasn’t done enough of lately, but I know I need to ignore that and do the easy one because of my back issue. I actually really like this feature and it’s one of my favorite parts of TrainerRoad.
