Why does Train Now allow me to do workouts that will change my training plan?

I am on a low volume plan, and on my unscheduled days I will often do rides suggested from the Train Now feature. Often times when I do the suggested workout will adapt the next scheduled ride I have that is part of the training plan. I’m curious why TrainerRoad would suggest a ride for me based off of my past training load but not account for my upcoming schedule.

As a 55-year-old man I am doing my best to get back into shape after a long battle with long Covid, and I want to maximize my training and hopefully get back to racing this year. Should I continue to add the workouts in as I’m able and take the adaptations or should I choose easier workouts on the unscheduled days that hopefully will not trigger the adaptations?

Short version, Trainnow is looking at that second, what it thinks you could do and what would be beneficial. It doesn’t care about tomorrow.

Longer version, some of this is changing so I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Really though if you are trying to add stuff in and are already on 2-3 hard rides a week you should probably just add in some easy stuff. You can also try the check volume feature (never used it personally) to see if it is going to suggest more days/time (I think that is how it works). If you are regularly adding in stuff via train now might as well schedule it.

Also it changing a future workout isn’t a bad thing.

TrainNow isn’t really considering your training plan. It’s more looking at what type of workout you should do right now based on your training history, as @mrtopher1980 mentioned.

If you’re regularly defaulting to TrainNow on your off days, I’d maybe suggest editing your plan to include another workout in your week. If you don’t always get to do the workout, that’s okay, but on the weeks that you do, at least the workout you’re doing is a part of your bigger plan. That ensures that what you’re doing each day is in line with your future training and your bigger goals. :raising_hands:

I would try and stick with the TR plan. If you do add anything in I would only add endurance.

Doing any other workout will probably impact your training negatively, not recovered enough to do hard work or making your hard work easier by adding TSS.
