Adaptive Training Closed Beta Update

How is that different from endurance? I want consistency, the zones here should match the zones that at uses

If the zones are supposed to mirror those of the progression levels, sustained power is tempo and sweetspot merged into one zone. That sounds like what sustained power is to me.

I’m not sure why the progression levels in an individual’s career and the progression levels on the plan page are using different terms. It is a beta after all, so perhaps they had played with different naming conventions internally before adding people to the beta and this maybe was something that got missed?

In any case, I agree it would be beneficial to have those levels on the workout page mirror the ones everywhere else (in name and in number) to limit/avoid confusion.

This is my point. There are 7 Difficulty zones, but plans use 6 zones, and of these 13 “zones”, only 3 are the same.

Same term used in both Difficulty & plan zones:

  1. Endurance
  2. Threshold
  3. VO2 Max

Use in Plans but not Difficulty zones:

  • Sustained Power
  • High Power
  • Burst Power

Used in Difficulty levels, but not plans

  • Tempo
  • Sweetspot
  • Anaerobic
  • Sprint

Having different terms for the two zones above VO2 Max really doesn’t make sense, as these should be one for one:

  • Anaerobic == High Power
  • Sprint == Burst Power

On Sustained Power:

  • Even for a time trials, this isn’t a single zone. For example: What is your power for a 10Km, 20Km, 40Km time trial? Is it all the same? I would bet that for all of these you are at / above threshold. So how is “Sustained Power” below threshold?
  • Now, if you want to talk about a century, gran fondo, etc. Then yes, “sustained power” is probably being able to sustain tempo / sweet spot power for long periods of time

Ha ha!! @enki42 If you have to ask the difference between sustained power and endurance, I suspect you have never done a TT. You should. Honestly, try one.

Or try this. Hold your FTP for 30 minutes. (=10m TT). That is sustained power. Its a complete contrast to riding for 4-5 hours outside on a road bike (which one would probably call endurance).

Now apply same approach to a 100m TT- maximum power you can hold, as a constant constant effort, for say 4.5 hours (a 100mTT). That is also sustained power… Of couse a 100m TT requires Sustained Power AND Endurance.

What is your point about the zones should match the zones AT uses? These are speciality sets desigend to help us train for specific types of event. I like the sustained power set - it suits what I do.

Sure, where the boundaries of a zone are and how to best train a zone may be complex but zones themselves are pretty simple. The higher the power zone the less time you can sustain it. The point of having zones match is to be consistent with terminology for how you describe the zones

Only if your definition of the zones are overlapping. But what you hold for 4.5 hours should be significantly different from what you can hold for 30 minutes

I feel like I’ve missed it, but I can’t seem to find this specifically referenced. I was wondering if there is a plan (or timeline) to include the “Outcome” and “Progression” assessments for outside TR workouts under ‘Recent Workouts’.
I find these assessments to be remarkably helpful since they serve as a quick ‘at-a-glace’ indication of where you’re at. But I understand the difficulty of providing such an assessment with all the variables surrounding outside workouts (matching intervals, evaluating if targets were hit, etc).
As a data-junky, I’d be happy to help the software produce these assessments if an interface were provided where I could manually specify the details for completed outside intervals.
Thanks for introducing such an exciting new feature suite. I feel so fortunate to be one of those chosen for this closed beta.

Update: I just found this post in the other thread. I think this answers my question:

Found this as well. Seems like not all if this is working yet in Closed Beta:

I’ve also had the issue of outside workouts not counting towards progression levels. I alerted them to that, and from what I understand it is on their radar because outdoor workouts are supposed to count toward progression levels since there is a known outcome. I was also told there will be surveys for outdoor workouts just like indoor workouts, but that they aren’t yet implemented. Hoping that gets added soon though as the weather is starting to break here and I’ll be taking my weekend workouts outside every week starting pretty soon (and I’ve already started).

They said that structured outdoor rides should count. They are working on unstructured outdoor rides.

Yes, that’s what I have read with their responses too, that outdoor unstructured will be a later implementation.

It’s definitely needed as I did two 4.5 hour rides on the weekend and I’m still stuck at 4 for my endurance level! I wonder if it will be retroactive once implemented?

Can you try to associate a similar TR workout to your outside ride?

My outdoor workouts are associated to the outdoor structured rides, but for some reason they aren’t being counted towards progression levels. It’s just a current bug, and bugs are to be expected considering AT is still in beta.

(edited for grammar)

Can you do that after the fact?

No. Had that confirmed by Support last week

Is there a way to change the survey response from what I originally entered after the ride?

I think you can update it within a 7 day window IIRC

you can update it from your workout details screen

Just been accepted on to the beta, so excited to get started, doing a ramp test later today. My question though is this. I train on a road bike and a TT bike. I’ve never tested my FTP on the TT bike but it’s around 20 watts lower than road bike. This makes using AT effectively a bit of a challenge as my progression levels will be different depending which bike I’m using. Eg an easy (ish) Sweetspot workout on the road bike might feel hard in TT position. Any thoughts on how best to handle this? I’m doing a dedicated block on the TT bike atm, so hopefully that 20 watt gap will reduce so it won’t be as much of a problem.

Thanks, I was able to find it on the desktop version and the survey would pop up but couldn’t actually change it (clicking ‘Save’ did nothing). I was able to change it through the TR App (Android) without problems

Good question: Likewise I am TT and road, with a focus on longer TTs. However, I do not think I have such a large gap between TT and road. I tend to Ramp test on the road bike, but get simiar FTP settings once the season starts on the TT bike from racing 10s and 25s.

I keep reading about TT to Road bike differences, but I wonder if it is related to power levels. ie, nominal up to Z4 threshold, but separating in higher zones Z6 or so, due to TT bike position. IF that reason for the difference is at the higher end of power outputs, (as required by a ramp test) rather than across the board, I wonder would doing a 20min FTP test for comparison be a better benchmark. Just a thought…

Final thought: I have just swapped from Rd bike to TT bike on the turbo. I had a really good TT bike fit late last year and I find that I am now able to spin far better and keep a higher cadence on the TT bike, than on my Road bike (for which I also had a bike fit by the same fitter).

So, could your gap be due to fit?

274 currently in beta as per Nate on 3/25 podcast. Hopefully another 100 today or early next week.
